The Forum for African Women Educationalists in Malawi (FAWEMA) is a registered non- governmental organization which brings together educationalists in order to support and promote education for girls and women in Malawi. We work in close partnership with the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Gender, Ministry of Health and other Ministries and partners to support girls and women to acquire education and training for development through advocacy and demonstrative interventions.

FAWEMA’s Mission: To promote gender responsive policies, attitudes and practices that provide opportunities to girls and women through evidence -based interventions that allow them to prosper.

FAWEMA, in partnership with CARE Malawi and Water Aid and with support from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) will be implementing a five-year effort (FY2025-FY2029) McGovern-Dole International Food for Education and Child Nutrition Program, locally titled ‘Tiwoloka’.

Tiwoloka aims to leverage donated U.S. agricultural commodities, local and regional agricultural commodities, and financial and technical assistance to carry out a school feeding program that will strengthen food security, reduce the incidence of hunger, improve literacy and education, particularly with respect to girls, and support child nutrition. It aligns closely with the Malawi’s Ministry of Education goals for enhancing education outcomes. The targeted schools (71 primary and 25 Early Childhood Development Centres) are in Kasungu, Lilongwe Rural, Ntcheu, Thyolo, Mulanje and Chiradzulu districts.

In order to ensure quality delivery of the project, FAWEMA seeks to recruit highly motivated and well experienced persons to fill the following position:

Accountant ( 1 to be based in Lilongwe)

Reporting to The Finance and Administration Manager, the Accountant will perform the following duties:

  • Support the Finance Manager in the preparation of quarterly financial and management accounts and specific project reports, ensuring budgets and actuals are accurately monitored and reported in a timely fashion.
  • Process payment requests after verifying supporting documents as per financial policy, contract with vendors/service providers and understanding budget implications
  • Maintain stringent confidentiality of all information used in the Finance Department by developing and implementing an appropriate filing system and ensuring full compliance with audit requirements and prescribed document retention periods
  • Managing all accounting transactions for the project
  • Budget preparation, implementation, and control
  • Coding and posting transactions in the accounting system
  • Maintaining Cashbook and preparing monthly bank reconciliations
  • Participating in the implementation of internal controls and making sure that the organization is following the international accounting standards
  • Preparation of final accounts, year end reports and supporting audits
  • Preparation of staff salaries and remittances of PAYE, Pensions and WHT to relevant authorities to ensure compliance with laws and regulations
  • Monitoring and coordinating the implementation of audit recommendations
  • Managing organization accounts records filing system
  • Managing working cash float ensuring cash liquidations are done in a timely manner within the stipulated timelines
  • Perform any such duties as may be assigned by Management from time to time

Qualifications, Knowledge, Competencies and Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting/finance or its equivalent from an accredited institution.
  • Professional accountancy qualification such as ACCA will be an added advantage.
  • Must be a member of ICAM
  • At least seven years’ experience in financial accounting, three of which must be in a similar position at an NGO or managing donor programs/grants.
  • Computer skills and familiarity with accounting software such as Quickbooks, SAGE is essential.
  • Ability to multi-task and work under pressure
  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to prioritize a demanding workload.
  • A team player
  • Personal qualities of integrity, credibility and ability to follow official systems and procedures
