VACANCY FOR THE POSITION OF ASSISTANT CHURCH ACCOUNTANT

REPORTING TOCHURCH ACCOUNTANT

JOB TYPE: Three-year contract subject to renewal depending on performance

POSITION FUNCTION (PURPOSE):

The accountant will be responsible for managing the financial transactions of the church so that all income, expenses, assets, liabilities and fund balances are accurately controlled and reported.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

The major duties and tasks of this job are.

  1. Receipting and recording weekly offerings/contributions to the main account and development account using the church’s accounting system.
  2. Authorizing vouchers for payments before final approval.
  3. Ensure that all requisitions have budget allocations.
  4. Updating the cash books daily.
  5. Prepare monthly bank reconciliation statements by 10th of each month,
  6. Carrying out banking activities.
  7. Preparing daily, monthly and annual reconciliations.
  8. Maintaining and managing petty cash books daily.
  9. Preparing settlement of utility bills e.g. water, electricity, telephones
  10. Maintaining an up-to-date backup of all electronic files.
  11. Preparing year-end financial reports for annual meetings by 31st May, each year.
  12. Preparing for and cooperating with those appointed to perform yearly audit of financial records.
  13. Ensure that all transactions are processed in the church’s accounting system.
  14. Any other duties.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Diploma in Accountancy from a recognized accountancy professional body.
  • Registered with the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Malawi (ICAM)

 EXPERIENCE

  • Not less than 3 years’ experience in a busy environment; at least two of which must be with a single employer.

 KEY COMPENTENCIES/ATTRIBUTES AND SKILLS:

  1. A demonstrated Christian faith commitment.
  2. Proven abilities to prepare and maintain final accounts.
  3. Demonstrated proficiency in computer skills including Microsoft Word and Excel.
  4. Practical experience in the design and implementation of computerized accounting systems such as Sage Pastel, QuickBooks Sun Systems etc.
  5. Commendable track record working in a competitive and challenging environment.
  6. A commitment to good interpersonal relationships, teamwork and support of church ministries.
  7. Planning and analytical skills, diagnostic and problem-solving skills, initiative and ability to implement solutions.
  8. Initiative, resourcefulness, integrity, hard-working spirit, and ability to delegate responsibility.
  9. A commitment to confidentiality regarding all accounts records for the church, staff and the members.
  10. A commitment to work on Sundays.
  11. Be an innovative team player.
