Job Description

Malawi National Commission for UNESCO (MNCU) was established on 23rd March 1979 through Malawi Government Gazette Notice No.375 in line with Article VII of the Constitution of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) with the purpose of linking UNESCO with Government and principal bodies in UNESCO’s fields of competence (i.e. Education, Natural Science, Social Sciences, Culture, Communication and Information).

In order to fulfil its mandate effectively and efficiently with excellence, MNCU intends to recruit:

(i) Assistant Programme Officer (Social and Human Sciences)
(ii) Secretary

The positions are on permanent basis upon successful completion of the probationary period.

1. ASSISTANT PROGRAMME OFFICER FOR SOCIAL AND HUMAN SCIENCES

JOB DESCRIPTION AND SPECIFICATIONS

The position involves provision of professional and technical support to more senior officers
as well as to Ministries, Departments and Agencies working in UNESCO’s field of competence of Social and Human Sciences.

Specifically, the job involves:

  • Planning and implementing programme activities to achieve the expected results of UNESCO’s Programme and Budget (C/5 document) aligning them with the Malawi Vision 2063 in UNESCO’s field of competence mentioned above.
  • Identifying needs in the Social and Human Sciences field, developing new project proposals, seeking funding from UNESCO’s Participation Programme, Regular Programme and Extra-Budgetary sources as well as other partners locally and internationally, and monitoring
    execution of those projects.
  • Following the developments and advancements in Social and Human Sciences’ sector in order to advise concerned stakeholders on policy formulation, project development, resource mobilization and best practices.
  • Carrying out research
  • Conducting monitoring and evaluation of the sector’s activities.
  • Producing documents
  • Coordinating the implementation of the Workplace Gender, Disability and Social Welfare policies of the Commission
  • Any other related tasks as required by management.

Skills and Competences

  • Knowledge of issues pertaining to the Social and Human Sciences sector within UNESCO’s area of competence
  • Strong strategic and analytical skills with ability to undertake research.
  • Excellent communication skills including  the ability to draft and produce a variety of written material in a clear and concise manner.
  • Ability to interact with a wide range of professionals and grassroots communities.
  • Good interpersonal skills with ability to build and maintain effective partnerships at all levels.
  • Ability to work and contribute effectively in a team and to maintain good working relations within a multicultural environment.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and to meet tight deadlines.
  • Good organizational and project design skills.

Qualifications

  • A minimum of University Degree in the field.

Work Experience

  • A minimum of 2 years of professional experience.
