Job Description

InfraWorks Development LLCis inviting applications from suitably qualified individuals to fill the position of ed Assistant Surveyortenable in Chikwawa. Infraworks Development LLC is an established consulting civil and structural engineering, and project management firm with a good footprint in the irrigation, water supply and sanitation, buildings, and roads sectors. We are based in Lilongwe and have a current project with our Partner SMEC in the southern region of Malawi.

The person should be driven, self-motivated, and should be able to work in agile conditions. Responsible as Assistant Surveyor to assist with surveying, checks and controls, reviews, mapping, and supervision of hydraulic, agricultural, irrigation, drainage, flood works, roads, buildings, drinking water supply system, power, electro-mechanical, and other types of infrastructure construction works as part of the consultancy services for Detailed Design, Construction Supervision, and Quality Assurance for Phase II Packages (21,100 ha) of the Shire Valley Irrigation Project. The position is for full-time on-site during the construction stage.

1. FunctionalResponsibilities

Under the direct supervision of the Senior Surveyor, the Assistant Surveyor will undertake the following tasks/duties:

  • Assist to check the Contractor’s survey and setting out and topographic survey data and related drawings.
  • Assist with review and preparation of GIS data, maps, and spatial measurements and analyses.
  • Assist with validating topographic findings prior to implantation of the structures on the ground.
  • Assist with supervising the alignment of the designed topography before implantation of infrastructure in the project.
  • Assist the Resident Engineer / Team Leader, Civil / Site Engineer, and other engineers in supervision of construction works, installations, and testing / commissioning activities to ensure compliance with the contract drawings, specifications and recognized international standards.
  • Inspection of construction activities, site installations and infrastructure.
  • Monitoring the observance, by the Contractors, of the measurements and specifications during the execution of the works.
  • Ensure that the Works are executed in accordance with the drawings and are in compliance with the technical specifications.
  • Maintaining daily record of all construction and works activities on site and any other matters affecting the progress, works quality, or cost of the works.
  • Promptly inform the SMEC Resident Engineer / Team Leader about problems or potential problems, which may arise in connection with the Works and make recommendations for possible solutions.
  • Provide timely assistance and direction to the Contractor in all matters related to the interpretation or clarification of the Works and ground survey controls in consultation with the SMEC Resident Engineer / Team Leader and relevant specialist SMEC engineers.
  • Conduct necessary field studies, data collection, measurements, and observations as needed.
  • Supervise the installation of various systems in the project.
  • Review, measure, and monitor the quantity of materials and compliance with designed specifications.
  • Ensure that all norms and standards are well respected as per design and where defaults found report these to the SMEC Resident Engineer / Team Leader.
  • Review as-built drawings and assist to report any needed corrections.
  • Closely monitor site works and keep well-organized electronic records, photos, and documentation with regular back-up as needed.
  • Ensure site compliance with the project’s environmental and social management and gender plans.
  • Ensure careful protection of ecologically sensitive sites.
  • Ensure site compliance with the project’s health and safety plans.
  • Supervise or coordinate work of other staff as required.
  • Assist the SMEC Resident Engineer / Team Leader in activities related to the management of the contractors’ contracts.
  • Make public presentations and guide visitors at the request of the Resident Engineer / Team Leader.
  • Train and build capacity of other staff and counterparts as needed.
  • Prepare and deliver presentations and attend meetings as needed.
  • Properly record, organize, store, analyze, and present data collected in the field.
  • Undertake data entry and other work on computers as necessary.
  • Assist the Resident Engineer / Team Leader in the daily management of project logistics including but not limited to: transport facilities, office equipment, and stationaries.
  • Prepare chapters, reports, documents as needed.
  • Ensure cost effective and timely execution of all activities.
  • Any other duties as requested by the SMEC Resident Engineer / Team Leader or Project Director.

3. Required Skills, Experience andEducational Qualifications

Education

  • At least an Advanced Diploma or B.Sc. in Land and Topographic Surveying. Registered as a graduate surveyor in Malawi

WorkExperience

  • Must Have worked for irrigation and water resources projects for at least 3 years, experience in carrying out and validation of topo surveys for water resources infrastructure, irrigation systems, hydraulic infrastructure, reservoirs, drinking water supply systems, drainage and flood protection works, and roads.

Membership

  • Should be a technician or graduate member of the surveyors institute in Malawi

LanguageRequirements

  • Fluency in written and spoken English.

Functionalcompetencies

  • Ability to prepare, read, and interpret drawings prior to implementation.
  • Quality control and measurement of construction contractor’s work.
  • Planning and reporting skills.
  • Computer skills to use MS Office applications and survey/mapping/GIS/CAD software and prepare documents and carry out calculations.
  • Must be able to work with a diverse team of professionals from different backgrounds and able to cooperate effectively and positively with local communities.
  • Fluent in English; written and oral.
  • Can prepare high quality digital records and documentation to international standards.
