Job Description

BACKGROUND

Amref Health Africa in Malawi is in the process of appointing two Board of Directors to join the
organization’s Board. The successful candidates will join the Board of Directors in their governance
role, as the organization continues to develop and grow in a rapidly changing development sector.
Amref Health Africa’s vision is to create a lasting health change in Africa and its mission is to
catalyze and drive community-led and people-centered health systems while addressing the social
determinants of health. The organization believes in the inherent power within the communities
and that the power for lasting transformation of Africa’s health lies within its communities. Amref
Health Africa in Malawi is governed by a Board of Directors comprising of members from a wide
range of backgrounds, bringing a great wealth of wisdom, insight and experience to the organization.

Main Responsibilities & Reporting Relationship

The Board is the principal governing body of Amref Health Africa in Malawi. The primary role of
the Board is to provide policy guidance, financial oversight, strategic orientation and leadership to
Amref Health Africa in Malawi. The Board is also expected to support senior management of Amref
Health Africa in Malawi in fulfilling the organization’s vision, mission and strategic plan.

Specific Responsibilities

The specific responsibilities of the Board of Director include (but are not limited to):

1. Determine strategies to move the organization forward, set goals, create and evaluate the process and results.
2. Support management in the development of new and unique ways to improve operations of the organization and to create new opportunities;
3. Reach out to various stakeholders for the good of the organization, advocate and fundraise both domestically and globally.
4. Positively influence others to achieve results that are in the best interest of the organization;
5. Promote ethical behavior and business practices, and ensure that own behavior and the behavior of others is consistent and aligned with standards and values of the organization.
6. Meeting and communicating regularly or as needed with all members of the Board and providing
feedback and input to committees as appropriate through the committee chairpersons;
7. Attending committee meetings where appropriate;
8. In consultation with the Board Chairperson, review and assess the performance of the Country
Director;
9. Anticipate, understand, and support management in responding to the needs of internal and
external stakeholders to meet or exceed the expectations within the organizational parameters.
10. Work co-operatively and effectively with others to set goals, resolve problems, and make decisions that enhance organizational effectiveness.

Qualifications and Experience

Preferred

1. Must possess either of the two skills listed below:

a. A Senior Finance professional with vast NGO Management experience, or
b. A Governance/Management Expert with legal qualifications and a background in social policy research.
2. Interested individuals must clearly indicate their area of expertise as stated above.
3. General understanding of the work of Amref Health Africa in Malawi.
4. Previous experience as a Board of Director in any other organization; either in commercial or
nonprofit organization.
5. Understanding of the legal duties and responsibilities and the role of the Board of Director.
6. Track record of interacting with governments, donors, the corporate and other key stakeholders.
7. Experience in governance and leadership, strategic planning and delivery and Consensus-Oriented.

Added advantages

1. Affiliation with or experience with Governance issues/approaches in Malawi.
2. Strong international exposure, with experience of interacting with international community.
3. Experience in impact-focused organizations, where results-based management approaches are
central to the operating model.
4. Global networks in international development/civil society or corporate sectors.

Term of Office:

One three-year term renewable once. The role is undertaken on a pro bono basis.
