Job Description

The Malawi Communication Regulatory Authority (MACRA), established by the Communications Act (Cap 68:01), is mandated to regulate and facilitate universal communication services in Malawi. In the fulfillment of this mandate, MACRA has deliberate programmes intended at ensuring communication services are universal.

In line with Government’s digitalization drive, MACRA has embarked on a programme of connecting schools to broadband services for the furthering of digital skills from the education system. MACRA has set aside funds to construct 120 purpose-built ICT laboratories in schools in this 2024 – 2025 financial year as one partner to the Ministry of Education in the drive to connect all schools in Malawi.

The Authority will equip the laboratories with ICT equipment, connect the laboratories to the internet, provides access to digital content and facilitate digital skills training. The purpose-built ICT laboratories will open opportunities for the schools and the communities in areas that are around these digital hubs.

The Authority, therefore, in collaboration with the Technical, Entrepreneurial, and Vocational Education and Training Authority (TEVETA), is looking for interested artisans in the required trades to be considered for the construction of ICT laboratories across different districts in Malawi.

BRICK LAYERS (7 PER SITE)

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Interpreting and following architectural plans, construction drawings, and specifications to accurately execute the design and layout of the masonry work.
  2. Interpreting work orders and determining the materials required.
  3. Measuring distance from reference points.
  4. Calculating angles and determining the vertical and horizontal alignment of courses.
  5. Preparing mortar by combining cement, sand, and water to the appropriate consistency.
  6. Fastening bricks with wire clamps or cement.
  7. Working safely on scaffolds and swing stages at various heights.
  8. Using equipment and tools effectively to perform basic construction tasks.
  9. Constructing walls, partitions, buildings, and other structures using bricks, concrete blocks, or other types of masonry units.
  10. Transport bricks, concrete blocks, and other masonry materials to the construction site which include operating forklifts, cranes, or other equipment to move heavy materials.
  11. Ensure precise alignment, levelness, and plumbness of the masonry work.

Requisite Qualifications and Experience

  1. Minimum of Malawi Intermediate TEVET Certificate in Bricklaying or its equivalent.
  2. Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE).
  3. Two years practicing experience in construction projects.
  4. Age range of 20 to 45 years.

Key Competencies and Attributes

The ideal candidate for the post is expected to have the following:

  1. Proven experience as a Bricklayer or Mason.
  2. Proficiency in reading and interpreting blueprints and construction drawings.
  3. Strong knowledge of masonry techniques, tools, and materials.
  4. Physical strength and stamina to handle heavy materials and work in various weather conditions.
  5. Attention to detail and precision in masonry work.
  6. Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  7. Understanding of safety procedures and willingness to comply with safety guidelines.
