BACKGROUND:

The Malawi Scotland Partnership (MaSP) is an independent national umbrella organisation which exists to inspire the people and organizations of Malawi to be involved with Scotland in an informed, coordinated and effective way for the benefit of both nations. We do this by providing fora where ideas, activities and information can be shared between our members, harnessing the expertise, experience and enthusiasm that exists for these civic links across Malawi.

By creating a single space for all the organizations and individuals in Malawi currently engaged with Scotland to come together, we help reduce duplication of effort, add value to the historic civil society relationship, and contribute towards poverty alleviation in Malawi.

MaSP is looking forward to recruiting a visionary, energetic, and highly inspiring individual as its Chief Executive Officer. The individual is expected to help further develop MaSP and to support the 160 year old partnership between Malawi and Scotland. The succesful applicant must be a highly driven and strategically-focused individual, who is able to inspire others about the model of dignified two-way people-to-people partnerships which unite the two nations.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Chief Executive

Responsible to : Chairperson of the MaSP Board of Directors
Responsible for : The Programmes Manager and Finance and Administrative Officer
Type of Contract : Fixed Annual Contract, renewable based on performance
Location : MaSP Headquarters, Lilongwe

Key Result Areas

  • Providing energetic, inspiring and pro-active leadership for MaSP, encapsulating the organisation’s vision and values;
  • Supporting the Board of Directors in its governance and oversight of the organisation;
  • Driving the overall strategic direction of MaSP including delivering the current organisational strategy:
  • Supporting the development of the organisation as a dynamic and influential national network;
  • Providing effective stewardship of all aspects of MaSP’s assets, staff, activities, plans, finances, contractual obligations and other strategic commitments in line with organisational strategy, values and policies;
  • Providing overall management and support of MaSP’s project and administration teams to effectively deliver the organisational strategy;
  • Establishing and maintaining a dynamic, pro-active working culture and ethos within MaSP;
  • Development and delivery of a sound Resource Mobilisation Strategy including, but not limited to, innovative and proactive organisational income streams;
  • Engaging, representing and growing MaSP’s membership base;
  • Strategically focusing MaSP’s membership to those with active links to Scotland;
  • Delivery of a regular programme of events and activities aimed at supporting, coordinating and representing members’ links with Scotland;
  • Representing Malawi’s bilateral civic links with Scotland in the media/press, with the Malawi Government and other stakeholders;
  • Developing and delivering successful operational and business plans in line with the organisational strategy and agreed performance standards/targets;
  • Developing and delivering strong planning, monitoring, evaluation and learning systems across all MaSP’s activities;
  • Developing and maintaining MaSP’s network of contacts across civil society, business, government, parliament; positioning MaSP as an integral part of Malawian internationalism;
  • Producing regular operational, financial and strategic reports for the Board, funders and key partners;
  • Meeting all reporting expectations of MaSP’s funders and ensuring MaSP complies with the terms of all grants;
  • Developing and managing budgets and ensuring sound financial management across the organisation;
  • Development of, and adherence to, key organisational policy and risk management systems;
  • Compliance with legal and best practice across MaSP’s portfolio of work;
  • Management of office systems and the Communication and Resources Centres;
  • Maintaining the reputation of MaSP and ensuring that all activities adhere to the organisation’s vision and values.

  • Able to work within and embrace MaSP’s vision and values.
  • Must have a Master’s Degree in Social Sciences/any development-oriented fields or Strategic Management AND at least 5 years of postgraduate experience in areas of Project Management and Advocacy.
  • Proven awareness and familiarity with National Development Policies and Strategies.
  • Highly passionate about Scotland and Malawi relations.
  • Experience working in an international organisation is desirable.
  • Excellent report writing skills.
  • Good public relations and public speaking skills.
  • Sound knowledge and skills in Organisation Development, Management and Sustainability.
