Job Description

The Malawi Blood Transfusion Service (MBTS) is a Trust that was established to provide a safe and adequate supply of blood and blood products to meet the needs of all patients in authorised hospitals in Malawi. It is committed to meet its objective of collecting, processing and testing all blood from voluntary non-remunerated blood donors in low-risk populations to international standards, in a cost-efficient manner.

MBTS is seeking a suitable candidate to fill the position of Chief Executive Officer which is tenable at its Head Office in Blantyre.

Job Summary

The CEO is responsible for ensuring that MBTS meets its objective of providing safe and adequate blood and blood products to all authorized hospitals in Malawi in a cost effective manner. The CEO is responsible for maintaining a sustainable service by fostering and influencing the MBTS’s relationships with the Government of Malawi through the Ministry of Health, the Board of Trustees, donor organizations, private and public sector organizations, special interest groups and members of the public.

The CEO provides skilled, strong and experienced strategic leadership, by establishing, approving and implementing strategic business and operational plans for all aspects of the MBTS. The CEO is responsible for ensuring that quality programs and services are delivered within legislative frameworks and protocols and is responsible for operational, financial and human resource policies and procedures.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Providing strategic direction and management with respect to the supply of safe and adequate blood to all authorized hospitals in Malawi.
2. Maintaining a financially sustainable service by liaising with the Government through the Ministry of Health and other donor and support organizations, including the private sector.
3. Providing support and expert analysis, advice and guidance to the Board of Trustees.
4. Ensuring that there are appropriately trained and qualified personnel available at any given time.
5. Acting as spokesperson for the Service on behalf of the Chairperson and the MBTS Trust, in the business of the service.
6. Ensuring financial health and sustainability of the MBTS
7. Preparing budgets, investments and cost control measures to ensure that services are delivered within budget allocations.
8. Developing risk mitigation strategies and taking measures to manage them.

Minimum Qualifications and Experience

● Both Masters and Bachelors Degrees in any of the following fields; Medicine, Public Health, Accounting and Administration;
● At least 10 years’ experience at an Executive Management level in a comparable or any other reputable institution, of which 5 years should be in the Malawi Health Sector,
● Proven leadership and management skills,
● Excellent communication /interpersonal skills, analytical, executive disposition, results oriented, with initiative, drive and self-motivation.
● Resource mobilisation, planning and project management skills.
