Position:   Clinical Superintendent – Grade H (1 post)

Job summary

Reporting to the Senior Medical Officer, the Clinical Superintendent will be responsible for overseeing the clinical operations and management of the hospital. The incumbent will ensure the delivery of high – quality patient care, manage clinical resources and maintain compliance with regulatory standards.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  • Carrying out basic general surgical / obstetric and gynecological procedures and attending to theatre emergencies.
  • Providing direction and leadership in the facilitation and implementation of clinical policies, guidelines, standards and procedures to ensure high quality patient care.
  • Conducting regular ward rounds of admitted patients to review possible discharges, treatment and any other related management.
  • Overseeing the day – to – day clinical operations, including resource allocation, staffing and patient flow.
  • Conducting regular outpatient clinics.
  • Participating in the night calls.
  • Supervising clinical staff performance and consequently conducting performance evaluation biannually in consultation with Human Resource Department.
  • Identifying, assessing and mitigating clinical risks to ensure patient safety and minimizing adverse events.
  • Preparation of Clinical Department budget and presenting it to management for approval.
  • Planning and preparing sound programmes for the department consequently monitoring and evaluating implementation.
  • Fostering effective communication and collaboration between clinical staff, management and other stakeholders.
  • Facilitating monthly and quarterly meetings for all clinical cadres.
  • Implementing and monitoring quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient outcomes and satisfaction.
  • Ensuring correct and complete recording of data in relevant HMIS registers and instruments
  • Ensuring timely processing of data and dissemination to all relevant stakeholders including timely submission of HMIS and departmental reports to designated supervisor
  • Performing routine monitoring of health indicators and using information in planning and management of health services
  • Lobbying with management and ensuring that required equipment is available and equitably distributed to meet hospital standards.
  • Identifying staff training needs and monitoring the implementation of continuous professional development of clinical staff
  • Staying up-to-date with the latest medical research, technologies and best practices to inform clinical decision-making.
  • Investigating and managing clinical incidents, including adverse events and near misses.
  • Ensuring that all clinical staff are practising legally and that they are duly registered with their respective Regulatory Bodies.
  • Taking a leading role in identifying training needs for the clinical department to be included in the annual training plan
  • Any other lawful duties assigned from time to time

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Obstetrics and Gynecology / Surgery from a recognized training institution.
  • Registered with the Medical Council of Malawi

Knowledge, Ability and Skills

  • Well conversant with the Health System in Malawi;
  • Ability to lead, motivate and inspire teams;
  • Strong analytical and problem identification and solving skills;
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
