COMMUNICATIONS OFFICER PART-TIME

Introduction

SOS Children’s Villages Malawi is a non-governmental child protection and development organization established in Malawi in 1991. Our vision is that every child belongs to a family and grows up with love, respect and security. Our mission is to build families for children in need, we help them shape their own futures, and we share in the development of their communities. In pursuit of the vision and mission, we work in collaboration with the Government of Malawi and other partners to implement various projects focusing on child protection and development; entrepreneurship and vocational skills training for young people; livelihood improvement for vulnerable households, child and youth education, as well as advocacy in the areas of child rights and protection. Our programme coverage is country-wide, operating from Chikwawa, Blantyre, Lilongwe, Mzimba and Mzuzu.

Role purpose

The Communications Officer will play a crucial role regarding communication and visibility actions, working with different project teams and functions. The position will be on 1-year fixed term contract to be based at SOS Children’s Villages Malawi National Office, Lilongwe.

Key tasks and responsibilities

a) Lead communication in line with the organizational communication and visibility plan
b) Actively support the development of communication products (e.g., press releases, case studies, videos, photography, online flyers, podcasts etc.)
c) Ensure content compliance with the brand guidelines, safeguarding and communications guidelines
d) Update organizational website and all other social media platforms
e) Maintain records of media coverage (especially social media) and collate analytics and metrics

f) Support fund development and advocacy interventions
g) Perform any other tasks assigned by the supervisor

Role qualifications, experience, skills

a) Degree in communication, marketing or other related sectors or equivalent experience
b) Minimum 3 years’ experience working in communications for a not-for-profit or other corporation.
c) Familiar with international child rights treaties and conventions, including international humanitarian principles.
d) Knowledge on the issues affecting children and children’s rights, and safeguarding.
e) Ability to develop creative high-quality communication products.
f) Innovative way of working/delivering communication content in a rapidly changing context
g) Ability to collaborate with advocacy and policy colleagues to ensure core messaging is consistent with advocacy and policy strategies.
h) Skills in news and press release writing
i) Good knowledge of audio and video editing, podcast creation, layout design and best practice for web content, including optimization of content for search
