Job Description

African Parks is a non-profit organisation that takes on direct responsibility for the rehabilitation and long-term management of Protected Areas, in partnership with governments and local communities. By adopting a business approach to conservation, supported by donor funding, African Parks aims to make each park sustainable in the long-term, thereby contributing to economic development and poverty alleviation.

COMMUNITY EXTENSION ASSISTANT

African Parks – Liwonde invites suitably qualified, experienced and dynamic person to fill the position of Community Extension Assistant tenable at Liwonde National Park.

The right candidate would be someone who is passionate about the work being done by African Parks in partnership with the Malawi Government within the conservation sector in Malawi. The Community Extension Assistant will be expected to do the following:

  • Keen understanding of Standard Operating Procedures(SOPS)
  • Protecting the organization’s interest
  • Management of all assets
  • Management of inventory
  • Procurement – Transparent and strictly follow Standing Operating Procedures
  • Manage asset inventory
  • Supervise USACOL supported community projects
  • Establish Tree Nurseries in VNRMCs/Schools
  • Coordinate tree planting and management
  • Conduct weekly supervisions to all Income Generating Activities(IGAs)
  • Supervise Guinea fowl farming
  • Coordinate Bee keeping.
  • Promote the natural forest regeneration
  • Supervise resource use programs
  • Compile Resource Use Data
  • Assist in the facilitation of community-based trainings
  • Supervise APM Community Development projects and report the progress in time
  • Attend zonal meetings for VNRMCs and report issues on time
  • Organize awareness Campaigns on cross cutting issues
  • Plan & conduct village sensitization/awareness raising meetings
  • Plan and Conduct Environmental Management Rally
  • Plan and conduct Environmental outreach programs to schools.
  • Assist in the organization of Wildlife Clubs chairpersons (leaders) annual workshop
  • Assist in the organization of Wildlife Clubs Patrons annual workshop
  • Coordinate wildlife club Visits to Liwonde
  • Submit weekly and monthly progress report on time
  • Assist in the organization of community cultural visits
  • Perform activities assigned from time to time

Qualifications and experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture and Natural Resource Management from accredited University/Institution with at least 3 years’ experience in a busy environment.
  • Highly analytical, willing to stay in remote areas
  • Ability to work under pressure at times, while maintaining high quality results is an essential requirement Honest, highly organized and self – motivated
  • Demonstrate the ability to work as part of a diverse team
  • A high level of computer literacy is required with intermediary excel skills
