Job Description

EQUINOCCIO, Compañía de Comercio Exterior S.L is looking for a Key Expert 2: Consumer Protection and Product Safety Expert  for the project “Competition and Consumer Product Safety in the COMESA Region – Technical Assistance.

Duration of the contract: 4 years.
The intended start date is 05/02/2025
Position: full time (preferably based in Malawi)

Key Expert 2: Consumer Protection and Product Safety Expert

The expert will be responsible for spearheading efforts to develop consumer welfare policies and regulations, in particular those related to consumer product safety and market surveillance; coordinating with relevant stakeholders to increase understanding and dialogue on consumer welfare and product safety rules and enforcement mechanisms; and establishing effective market surveillance mechanisms to ensure compliance with consumer product safety regulations and enhance public and private sector compliance with competition law and consumer welfare rules.

Qualifications and Skills

The expert should have a minimum of master’s degree in relevant field such as Law, Economics, Business/Public Administration/Management from a recognised institution, and at least 12 years of relevant professional experience in consumer product safety and market surveillance. Qualifications in consumer protection laws shall be an added advantage.

General Professional Experience

The expert will have at least 12 years’ experience in working on preferably EU consumer welfare policies, regulations, and consumer product safety. Delivering capacity-building initiatives in consumer protection would be an asset.

Specific Professional Experience

At least 12 years’ experience working on preferably EU consumer safety regulations and policies.

At least 10 years’ experience leading the development and implementation of consumer welfare policies and regulations, with a focus on consumer product safety.

Proven track-record of coordinating with relevant stakeholders to facilitate dialogue and consensus-building on consumer welfare and product safety issues.

Proven track-record in designing and implementing market surveillance mechanisms to ensure compliance with consumer product safety regulations.

Practical experience in project management of EU-funded programmes, ideally in the COMESA Region will be an added advantage; and

The expert should be fluent in English, fluency in other COMESA languages will be an added advantage.
