ORGANIZATIONAL PROFILE:

Partners in Health (PIH) is a non-profit organization based in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, whose mission is to provide a preferential option for the poor in health care. Through service delivery, training, advocacy and research, PIH works globally to bring the benefits of modern science to those most in need and to serve as an antidote to despair. PIH has programs in Haiti, Peru, Mexico, Russia, Rwanda, Lesotho, Malawi, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Kazakhstan and Boston.

PIH began working in Malawi in 2007, where today we support the Ministry of Health (MOH) to serve a catchment area of 165,000 through 12 health centers and two hospitals in partnership with our sister organizations. Abwenzi Pa Za Umoyo (APZU) has its headquarters in Neno District with operations across the country.

We therefore seek to recruit suitably qualified and experienced candidates for the following position:

Position: Driver and Motorbike Mechanic

Reports to : Transport Officer

Commitment: Full Time (Monday-Friday)

Working Hours: Regular Office Hours (40Hrs/ Week)

Location: Neno District, Malawi

Position Summary

The primary responsibility of a motorbike mechanic/ driver is to perform routine motorbike services and periodic maintenance and the secondary responsibility is to safely and timely transport patients, their family members/guardians, employees, company goods and other individuals designated by the employer, whenever necessary.

Responsibilities and Duties:

Motorbike Mechanic Responsibilities

  • Undertake all routine maintenance of motorbikes in accordance with the fleet maintenance schedule
  • Diagnose faults and replace damaged parts in motorbikes
  • Prepare purchase request for motorbike spare parts and accessories.
  • Maintain and repair all motorbikes
  • Carry out standard servicing and checks
  • Carry out repair and testing of motorbikes to check status of repair work
  • Attend to motorbikes when a breakdown occurs Keep and monitor spare parts inventory in the warehouse

Motor Vehicle Driving Responsibilities

  • Conduct daily vehicle inspections and report any mechanical issues or damages immediately.
  • Safely drive organizational vehicles as advised Record all trips in the car log book and CommCare.
  • Monitor fuel in organizational vehicles and alert the head driver on low fuel levels.
  • Ensure adherence to seating capacity of vehicle at all times
  • Maintain vehicles in good working order, including checking the tire inflation, oil levels, other fluid levels, and air and oil filters.
  • Maintain cleanliness in the interior and exterior of the vehicles.
  • Follow any system installed in the vehicle without tampering with it.
  • Monitor mileage for vehicle service
  • Ensure that the fuel card is efficiently used and receipts are submitted on time
  • Report problems as soon as they arise
  • Ensure the use of seatbelts is done at all times inclucing for passengers.
  • Adhere to all traffic laws, regulations, and PIH’s driving policies and procedures

Qualifications, Attribute and Experience Required

  • Minimum of Certificate in Motorcycle Mechanics from a recognized institution
  • A valid driving license with completion of Defensive Driving course
  • Previous professional experience in motorcycle mechanics for at least 3-5 years
  • Experience driving in challenging terrains
  • Good communication skills in both English and Chichewa and ability to follow instructions
  • Willingness to live and work full-time in a rural setting
  • Neat and professional appearance
  • Willingness to work during odd hours and on weekends as required
  • Reliable and furnished with integrity
  • Friendly and rich with team working spirit
