The Transforming Higher Education Systems Project (the Project) supports Malawi’s Higher Education System (HES) to expand the nation’s pool of skilled and employable workforce to spur economic prosperity and self-reliance and enhance the country’s resilience to shocks. The Project is committed to addressing gender, equity, and social inclusion for all Malawian youth, and is focused on sustainable, systemic capacity development.
The 5-year, USAID-funded project, implemented by Michigan State University, is seeking a Driver on a consultancy basis with approximately 25% level of effort (LOE) each month for our Program Management Unit (PMU). We are currently entering Program Year 3 of our project. The successful candidates will join a team of Malawi-based technical experts at the PMU and will also partner with and have support from a team of US-based colleagues who have similar areas of technical expertise.
This position will be based in Lilongwe, Malawi and will require frequent travel across Malawi.

Job Description—Driver (Consultant)
The 5-year, USAID-funded Transforming Higher Education Systems project, implemented by Michigan State University (MSU), is seeking a Driver on a consultancy basis to join our Malawi-based project team. The successful candidate will have experience driving and maintaining vehicles for a similar entity and be highly attuned to safety and security of passengers and pedestrians.
Directly reporting to the Finance and Administration Manager (FAM), the Driver is responsible for maintaining project vehicle(s) in good condition and transporting staff on project business in compliance with safety and security measures.
Key roles include:
- Drive office vehicle to transport project staff on authorized project business within Malawi (this may require overnight stays of up to several days’ duration).
- If non-staff or partner staff ride in vehicles for authorized project business, ensure they complete a liability waiver prior to trip.
- Ensure safety of those in the vehicle, including the wearing of seatbelts—the car shall not be put into Drive if anyone is without a seatbelt. The Driver will also ensure trips are planned so that they conclude before nightfall.
- Manage vehicle emergency kits, including checking inventory and restocking in coordination with operations staff.
- Perform daily maintenance of vehicles, including checking tires, oil, spark plugs, brakes, battery, water, and other vehicle parts. Perform minor repairs and arrange for and oversee repairs with skilled mechanics.
- Immediately report any accident or damage of vehicle, and ensure that all steps required by local law are followed.
- Maintain daily trip logs, including mileage, gas consumption, oil changes, etc.
- Ensure that there is sufficient fuel available for the vehicle at all times.
- Maintain the vehicle exterior in a clean and neat condition.
- Inform operations staff of the need to replenish any spare parts.
- Assist in loading and unloading vehicle.
Required Qualifications
- Completed secondary school (MSCE).
- Hold an official Malawi driving license and have a good driving record.
- At least 2 years’ experience as a Driver with a local or international organization or company.
- Basic knowledge and skills in vehicle repair and maintenance.
- Basic ability to communicate in English.
- Ability to travel within Malawi.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience working with USAID or similar donors.
