Trócaire is one of Ireland’s lead NGOs working in partnership with local and national NGOs, faith based- and advocacy organisations and networks in Malawi. Trócaire envisages a just and peaceful world where; people’s dignity is ensured, and rights are respected; basic needs are met, and resources are shared equitably; and people have control over their own lives. Globally, Trócaire provides humanitarian assistance and long-term support to communities in over 17 countries across Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East. Trócaire has worked in Malawi since 1976 and established its country office in Lilongwe in 2007. In Malawi, we work across three thematic areas namely Women’s Protection, Voice and Influence; Climate and Envrironmental Justice; and Saving Lives and Protecting Human Dignity.
Trócaire are looking for dynamic, mature and motivated people to take up two exciting positions within its country office team. The positions of 1) Driver (full-time) and 2) Stand by Driver (part time) are key roles within Trócaire’s administration team and the appointed people will join a dedicated team of Trócaire staff and will report to the Administration Officer (AO). The Driver (full time) position is a full-time position, and the Standby Driver (part time) position is an on-call position where the driver will be requested, when necessary, to support the existing Trócaire drivers during times of high workload. Both the Driver Full-time and the Stand-By driver will be responsible for the maintenance of office vehicles, for transporting Trócaire staff and visitors safely to and from our programme areas and for supporting the AO with errands and tasks within the city. When not driving, both roles may be requested by the AO to support in office based administrative tasks such as photocopying, receiving visitors and filing.
- Transporting Trócaire staff and visitors to and from Trócaire’s programme areas in Central and Southern Malawi
- In line with the Government of Malawi’s traffic rules and regulations, drive Trócaire vehicles safely and with the utmost care
- Ensure adherence to Trócaire’s vehicle policy, standard operating procedures and other relevant policies
- Maintain, in an agreed manner, accurate logbooks for Trócaire vehicles
- Assure the full and timely maintenance of Trócaire vehicles
- Ensure that insurance, registration, and roadworthy documents are all up to date for all Trócaire vehicles
- In line with Trócaire’s Standard Operating Procedures support ongoing office operations such as depositing/withdrawing cash or cheques, collecting statements and requesting quotations,
- Supporting the AO, when necessary, on variety of office tasks such as reception of visitors, answering the telephone, filing, photocopying, typing short documents when required, keeping the office tidy, sending faxes, scanning documents etc
- In line with Trócaire’s security procedures report any incident (whether accident, breakdown, theft from vehicle, or otherwise) immediately to the line manager
- Any other reasonable duty as may be assigned by the line manager
Requirements
Personal Specification
- Clean class C1 and category PG driving license.
- A minimum of Malawi School Certification of Education
- Three or more years previous experience driving for international or local organizations
- Experience driving in urban and rural settings with good ability to handle and manage four-wheel drive vehicles
- Basic mechanical skills
- Computer literate
- Experienced with common administrative tasks
- Ability to prepare and keep computerized records and use e-mail
- Defensive Driving License
- Good oral and written English and Chichewa language skills. Other Malawian languages an asset
- Honest and person of integrity
- Ability to follow instructions

Both positions are offered on a one-year contract, with the possibility of further extension dependent on performance and availability of funds. Both positions are based in Lilongwe with frequent travel to Trócaire’s programme areas in Central and Southern Malawi.
