COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM OFFICER

Gala Agriculture Company Ltd, one of the country’s leading macadamia producing business, operates 12 estates in the Lilongwe District, is looking to recruit an experienced, highly dynamic, motivated and skilled individual as Environmental Health and Safety Officer-EHSO.

Position Summary

The core of the role will be driving executing and planning environmental safeguards at workplace and must be able to transform all policies and procedures into executable service delivery for continuous operations improvements. Overseeing daily operations of Environmental safeguards for Gala Agriculture such as carrying our EHS spot checks and risk audits updating compliance records. Food safety management systems, support LMO on land conflicts as well as CDPO on social development, accident and incident recording and investigation.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • To assist in improving and implementing a corporate Environmental, Health and Safety plans at Gala Agriculture as a workforce.
  • To drive the corporate Environment, Health and Safety Management System at Gala Agriculture.
  • To ensure that monitoring and implementation of Compliance and Environmental Management Plans are being carried out as specified in ESAP Roadmap for Gala Agriculture.
  • To assist in leading on the development of a culture of Environmental, Health and safety awareness across all Gala Agriculture Business Units.
  • To build capacity and provide mentorship to Gala Agriculture HSE function for instance, assisting in executing training strategies to ensuring the continual development of professional competence and excellence at workplace.
  • To assist in continuously managing, supporting and mentoring all appointed Health and safety coordinators at each workplace within Gala Agriculture.
  • To take collective responsibility within Gala Agriculture for overall performance of the company in terms of HSE matters.
  • Conducting OHS risk assessments and developing site level OHS management plans and emergency evacuation and Crisis management procedures: and monitoring and reviewing the performance of implementation.
  • To ensure that Health and Safety Coordinators are following established work plans to be a high standard.
  • Assist to conduct 20 Keys Audit and Ensure proper records of HSE documentation.
  • To provide Weekly Monthly and Quarterly reports on HSE to Senior Head of ESG and Impact.
  • To ensure that proper records of minutes of the EHS committee are kept in tidy and professional manner
  • To assist in investigating incidents and accidents and respond to emergencies as needed.
  • Co-opt member of Monthly Health and Safety Committee meeting organized at Business Units.
  • To collate and present information to support reporting of HSE matters to Senior Head of ESG and Impact for investors, including demonstrating compliance with ESAP requirements.
  • To Supervise and monitor contractors for compliance with Gala Agriculture EHS Policies and Procedures.
  • Assisting CDPO in Maintaining and managing grievance mechanism.
  • Ensure that the compliance to the requirements of food safety, and risks is adhered.
  • Assist in Planning, monitoring and Controlling ESG Departmental budget.
  • Conduct monthly Spot checks and Quarterly Compliance Audits in all Business Units and keep records of the results.
  • Reporting to Senior Head of ESG and Impact

Required Education and Experience

  • Malawi School Certificate of Examination.
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering preferably Mechanical or Electrical and Environmental Sciences or any related qualification.
  • At least 7 years hands on working experience with at least 3 years in handling ESG and conversant with investments projects.

Required Skills and Attributes

  • Physically fit to move around dusty roads, willing to work in harsh environment
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must have experience in using computers i.e. Outlook, office power point, office excel and office word.
  • Must be willing to perform additional tasks and duties outside of the above job description.
  • Must be prepared to stay in the remote areas.
  • Must have Class A Motorcycle valid licence with more than 3 years riding motorbike experience.
