Job Description
Lighthouse Trust is a registered Public Trust established to manage Centres of Excellence (CoEs) and provide leverage for leadership and delivery of integrated HIV prevention, treatment, care, and support services in Malawi. Lighthouse has been involved in the development of locally applicable HIV care and treatment models. It is strategically positioned in Malawi’s national HIV response due to its close collaboration with the Ministry of Health (MoH). The Lighthouse in close coordination with MoH provides integrated services at Kamuzu Central Hospital, Bwaila Hospital, and some health facilities in urban and rural areas in Lilongwe, Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Blantyre, Zomba Central Hospital and Mzuzu central hospital in Mzuzu. Its strategic approach focuses on client- centred care based on four goals which are:
Goal 1: Service delivery: to enhance high-quality, integrated HIV. prevention, treatment, care and support services for adults and children.
Goal 2: Model interventions and operations research: to develop, pilot, evaluate, and disseminate innovative programs and policies across the continuum of prevention, treatment, care and support for HIV infection and its co-morbidities, both infectious and non-infectious.
Goal 3: Quality management: to ensure that all patients at Lighthouse clinics and all supported sites are receiving quality health care and services as recommended by the MoH and other health development partners by utilizing quality improvement (Ql) methodologies in a multidisciplinary team approach.
Goal 4: Capacity strengthening: to build and strengthen healthcare capacity for high quality HIV prevention, treatment, care and support services.
Lighthouse Trust, with support from the United States of America President’s Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) through a Cooperative Agreement with Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), has two grants to operate Centres of Excellence for Comprehensive Integrated HIV Care and Treatment Services in Lilongwe (Grant #NUGGH002131).
In order to achieve the above – mentioned goals, Lighthouse wishes to recruit a highly qualified and experienced person to fill the positions of:
Position Title: Executive Director

Overview of the Position
Reporting directly to the Chairperson of the Board of Trustees, the Executive Director (ED) will provide overall strategic leadership and managerial direction for the
Lighthouse Trust. Based in Lilongwe, Malawi, the ED will have technical and management responsibility for all activities and personnel and will be the Lighthouse Trust official and legal signing representative to all donors as well as to key stakeholders. The ED will have overall responsibility for addressing award related matters. She/he will be responsible for the smooth implementation of the Lighthouse Trust and for effectively addressing problems and challenges that arise during performance. The incumbent will also be responsible for timely and accurate delivery of all reports and other program products.
Key roles and responsibilities of the position
A. Leadership and strategy
- Overseeing the development of strategic and programme plans, and the reporting of results to the lighthouse donors and other key stakeholders.
- Overseeing the organization’s daily activities, programme management and implementation.
Leading in formulating, reviewing and monitoring implementation of the organisational policies, strategies, systems, as approved by the Board of trustees. - Lead in the writing of continuation applications and Notice of Awards.
- Safeguarding the Lighthouse’s Reputation and maintaining good relations with the Ministry of Health, donor partners and other stakeholders in the health sector.
B. Human resources management
- Provide guidance in the hiring and off-hiring of staff, in collaboration with the administration directorate and Board of Trustees.
- Monitoring and evaluating the performance of Directors to ensure that their Directorates are performing in line with the Lighthouse strategic objectives.
- Monitoring and evaluating overall organizational performance in meeting strategic objectives and determining areas of potential improvement.
C. Financial management oversight
- Ensuring good stewardship of funds and resources, and timely reporting to the Board of Trustees and donors.
- Ensure that the organisation is fully compliant with applicable standards for each respective donor.
- Leading in consolidating Budgets and monitoring implementation of the same to ensure efficient and effective resource management within the budget framework
D. Governance
- Acting as a Secretary to the Board of Trustees and participating in the sub- committee meetings.
- Advising the Board on the performance of the Trust and its affairs
- Producing and submitting reports to the Board and other relevant stakeholders
- Organizing, preparing agenda and Board papers for Board meetings
- Carrying out any other tasks as required by the Board of Trustees
E. Resource Mobilisation
- Lead in the development, review, and implementation of the Resource Mobilization Strategy for Lighthouse.
- Lead in the establishment and networking, as well as collaboration with relevant donors and government ministries.
- Take overall responsibility for resource mobilization, lead in the development of new proposals to diversify the donor base. Seek partnerships with the private sector in Malawi and ensure that the Lighthouse Investment Fund is well-managed leading to a growth in the Investment Fund.
Qualifications and Experience
- PhD or MD/MBBS or MBA with at least 10 years’ experience in an executive leadership position in an HIV and AIDS Policy or Implementing Institution, developing strategic plans and funding strategies.
- Experience working at a policy level with Malawi MoH and with International Health and Development agencies.
- Ability to communicate and to confidently engage with high-ranking government and donor partners.
- Trustworthy and track record of transparent and impeccable professional and personal integrity.
- Knowledge of international and United States Government donor agencies and private sector foundations.
- Highly organized with ability to prioritize, multitask and take initiative.
- Strong analytical, oral, and written communication skills in English.
- Ability to work under pressure, meet multiple deadlines, and troubleshoot and problem solving.
