Throughout, we translate client ambition into action and impact on the ground.POSITION MANDATEResonance is seeking a Fisheries Science Improvement Lead to support the anticipated USAID Malawi Fisheries Management Activity, which is expected to strengthen economic, regulatory, and governance mechanisms that effectively conserve the exceptional biodiversity of Lake Malawi while supporting improved livelihoods from sustainable, inclusive, and equitable wild-caught fisheries in priority areas of the Lake. The Fisheries Science Improvement Lead will oversee Activity efforts to strengthen the Government of Malawi’s capacity to measure and monitor the population, health, and stock size of target wild fisheries species in Lake MalawiThis is a full-time position based in Malawi, reporting to the COP. |
| OUTCOMES / Essential Functions |
| Lead all technical scientific support services across the implementation of the activity and contribute to technical work detailed in the work plan as required.Oversee the delivery of all stock assessment services and technical science initiatives, as well as delivery of capacity building in stock assessment and modelling.Design and oversee monitoring programs, participate in monitoring surveys, analyze, and interpret data, and make management recommendations for marine fish resources.Analyze and interpret data collected from various fishery monitoring programs and be familiar with quantitative stock assessment methodology, survey design, and biostatistical analysis.Evaluate the conservation benefits and implications of current and potential implementation approaches through scenario modelling and management strategy evaluation.Liaise with COP, USAID, Government of Malawi, and the scientific community on stock assessment-related issues.Present analyses and trends of data graphically in written reports and at meetings. |
| Required education & experience |
| Advanced degree in ichthyology, natural resource management, biodiversity conservation, fisheries management, or a related fieldAt least eight years of relevant professional experience in sustainable fisheries, stock assessments, biodiversity conservation, and/or aquaculture (can substitute two years of experience with a Master’s).Prior experience engaging or working with international donors (like USAID), foundations or reputed NGOs. Experience in cross-sectoral and cross-team collaboration.Outstanding written and oral communications skills; some level of comfort speaking to diverse and large groups.A strong ability to use Microsoft Office products, including PowerPoint, Excel, and Word and provide quality written products and excel analysis.Ability to travel domestically |
