The Forum for African Women Educationalists in Malawi (FAWEMA) is a registered non- governmental organization which brings together educationalists in order to support and promote education for girls and women in Malawi. We work in close partnership with the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Gender, Ministry of Health and other Ministries and partners to support girls and women to acquire education and training for development through advocacy and demonstrative interventions.

FAWEMA’s Mission: To promote gender responsive policies, attitudes and practices that provide opportunities to girls and women through evidence -based interventions that allow them to prosper.

FAWEMA, in partnership with CARE Malawi and Water Aid and with support from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) will be implementing a five-year effort (FY2025-FY2029) McGovern-Dole International Food for Education and Child Nutrition Program, locally titled ‘Tiwoloka’.

Tiwoloka aims to leverage donated U.S. agricultural commodities, local and regional agricultural commodities, and financial and technical assistance to carry out a school feeding program that will strengthen food security, reduce the incidence of hunger, improve literacy and education, particularly with respect to girls, and support child nutrition. It aligns closely with the Malawi’s Ministry of Education goals for enhancing education outcomes. The targeted schools (71 primary and 25 Early Childhood Development Centres) are in Kasungu, Lilongwe Rural, Ntcheu, Thyolo, Mulanje and Chiradzulu districts.

In order to ensure quality delivery of the project, FAWEMA seeks to recruit highly motivated and well experienced persons to fill the following position:

Gender Manager (1 position to be based in Lilongwe)

Reporting to the Programme Manager, the Gender Manager will perform the following duties among others:

  • Provide technical advice and trainings to program staff, partners, and stakeholders to build their capacity to integrate gender, youth, and other relevant social considerations into designing interventions, implementation, and monitoring and evaluation
  • Work with the Project Team to provide technical leadership to the project to ensure thorough integration/mainstreaming of gender in all interventions
  • Design and deliver realistic and pragmatic gender strategies and programming interventions that will lead to positive gender equality outcomes.
  • Prepare, maintain, and update gender knowledge agenda, capture lessons learnt including collection and dissemination of knowledge products to stimulate internal and external knowledge exchange and to support learning around gender.
  • Identify successful gender mainstreaming practices in the project that can be showcased in publications, communication materials and conferences.
  • Work closely with key stakeholders including partner NGOs and Ministry of Education, on the implementation of the project
  • Lead on the project financial management ensuring accountability, analysis and reporting of financial expenditures to Management and donor.
  • In consultation with the Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability and Learning (MEAL) team, ensure that the project is meeting all the intended milestones within the required time frames.
  • Work with the Management Team to submit accurate and timely program and financial reports.
  • Carry out other duties related as assigned by Management.

Qualifications, Skills, Competencies & Experience

  • Master’s degree in social science, gender, international development, or relevant field is required.
  • Minimum 6 years of progressive experience in development programming, preferably in literacy and education, WASH, agriculture and food systems context.
  • Knowledge of and experience with USAID rules and regulations is required.
  • Knowledge of do no harm, women’s empowerment, and positive youth development frameworks and approaches is required.
  • Experience developing and conducting gender, youth and inclusion training, gender/youth/social dynamics mainstreaming and engaging in gender advocacy.
  • Demonstrated capacity to lead the collection, analysis and utilization of information from a broad range of sources to ensure effective integration of gender and youth concerns throughout project implementation.
  • In-depth understanding of gender, age and other locally significant socio-cultural factors in the context of education, food and nutrition security, humanitarian assistance, livelihoods, market systems and resilience programming.
  • Skills in participatory learning and facilitating collaborative problem-solving.
  • Fluency in English is required.
