Job Description

Job Responsibilities

The Head of Legal Services will provide professional legal services to the TEVET Authority and TEVETA Board and reporting to the Director of Corporate Services.

KEY DUTIES  

(a) Leadership and Management

  • Leading and managing the legal department
  • Providing strategic legal advice to the executive team and board of directors on a wide range of legal matters including corporate governance, compliance, litigation, and intellectual property.
  • Maintaining and cataloguing legal documents and contracts for the purpose of ensuring accurate reference materials

(b) Policy Development

  • Developing and implementing legal policies and procedures to ensure compliance with all relevant laws and regulations.

(c) Risk Management

  • Identifying and mitigating legal risks associated with the Authority’s operations and transactions.

(d) Contract Management 

  • Overseeing the drafting, negotiation, and review of contracts, agreements, and other legal documents.
  • Reviewing agreements and contracts on behalf of the Authority

(e) Litigation Management

  • Representing the Authority in legal matters
  • Liaising with the Authority’s retained Legal Counsel on and cases in Court
  • Providing legal opinions, legal interpretations, and recommendations to the Authority for the purpose of ensuring that the Authority maintains compliance with various local and international regulations.
  • Maintaining and cataloguing legal documents and contracts for the purpose of ensuring accurate reference materials

(f) Training and Development

  • Conducting legal training for staff to ensure awareness and understanding of legal issues affecting the business.

(g) Collaboration

  • Working closely with other departments to ensure legal compliance and support business objectives.
  • In consultation with the relevant Directorates in the Authority, researching and initiating review of relevant Acts, other regulatory instruments, and policies.

(h) Budget Management

  • Manage the Legal department budget
  • Lead in the development of budget estimates including the preparation of monthly, quarterly and annual cash flow projections in respect of the TEVET Authority’s programs.

Educational Requirements

  1. Master’s degree in law (LLB) from a recognized university with a valid license to practice law in all the Courts of Malawi
  2. Bachelor’s degree in law

Experience Requirements

  • Minimum of 5 years relevant experience

Additional Requirements

Must be a full registered member of Malawi Law Society
