Job Description

The Lilongwe Water Board is a Statutory Corporation established in 1947 and re-constituted in 1995 under the Water Works Act (Cap 72). It is responsible for the provision of water supply and sanitation services to the City of Lilongwe and other surrounding areas designated as its supply area. The Board is inviting applications from suitably qualified candidates of Malawian origin to fill the following positions that exist within the Board.

Division: Human Resource
Responsible to: Director of Corporate Services
Responsible for : None

Reporting to the Director of Corporate Services, the Health and Safety Officer will be responsible for the following:

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Ensuring that all reasonable steps are taken to prevent accidents;
  2. Ensuring that all laws, regulations, procedures and policies relating to safety or health are followed by all employees;
  3. Ensuring that safety and health meetings are held and Minutes are recorded, posted and filed accordingly for future reference;
  4. Conducting inspections to ensure that the workplace is free from hazards;
  5. Carrying out risk assessments;
  6. Identifying occupational risks and hazards and report them;
  7. Conducting safety and health trainings;
  8. Carrying out internal safety and health audits;
  9. Ensuring that documents relating to safety are provided for all hazardous materials delivered to the workplace and are readily available for employees’ information and reference;
  10. Ensuring that employees are trained in the procedures and requirements of Occupational safety and health;
  11. Reviewing all accidents and near misses to establish root causes, and make remedial proposals for implementation to prevent re-occurrence;
  12. Demonstrating outstanding commitment to service delivery programs of the Board by personally identifying and reporting water bursts/ leakages to customer care Division of which verifiable repair records shall be tendered to be used as one of the components for assessment during one’s performance appraisal time.

Academic and professional qualifications and work experience 

  1. A minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Safety and Health, Public Health or Environmental Health plus two years’ experience;
  2. Must be familiar with OSH&W Act (Cap. 55:07), and any other Laws of Malawi relating to safety or health of employees at workplace.
