COMSIP Cooperative Union Limited is a member owned organization with a national footprint,
registered under the Cooperative Act 1998. COMSIP works with rural and peri-urban community
groups that are owned, managed and controlled by members themselves and its main thrust is
building a culture of savings and investment among ordinary Malawians in a quest to improve
livelihoods.
COMSIP has received funding from the World Bank through the National Government Finance
Commission (NLGFC) towards the implementation of Social Support for Resilient Livelihoods
Project (SSRLP). COMSIP therefore intends to use part of the funding to recruit suitably qualified, experienced, and result oriented project staff on the posts tenable at COMSIP Head Office, in Lilongwe as follows.
Internal Audit Officer
Job Description
The Internal Audit Officer will be a committed professional who will report directly to the Risk, Compliance & Audit Specialist and will be expected to contribute to the successful planning and delivery of the annual plans of internal audit activities aimed at adding value and improving the operations of the organisation and its affiliates. The ability to communicate effectively is an essential requirement for this post therefore strong report writing skills are required.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
The duties include but not limited to:
- Assisting in developing and implementing risk based annual internal audit plans and
budgets for COMSIP Union and its affiliates. - Conducting audits in line with the approved Internal Audit Plans or/and investigations
on management request. - Presentation of clear, concise and timely working papers in line with International Internal Auditing Standards.
- Updating the status of previous internal and external audit recommendations implementation on a quarterly basis to ensure that corrective action has been taken.
- The timely delivery of professional written draft reports and practical value-added recommendations on issues arising during audit work.
- Drive a policy of best practice with a focus on continuous improvement and awareness across COMSIP Union with respect to internal control, risk and corporate governance.
- Supervise subordinate staff.
- Train affiliates supervisory committees in basic audit principles and procedures.
- Develop and maintain productive business relationships across all units in COMSIP Union.
Qualification, experience, skills and knowledge requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in Internal Auditing or Accountancy.
- A minimum of 3 years’ proven experience in either internal or external auditing.
- Membership to the Institute of Internal Auditors IIA) Malawi or Institute of Chartered Accountants in Malawi (ICAM).
- Knowledge in cooperative movement and working with rural people will be an added advantage.
- Excellent technical audit and accounting skills.
- Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills with an ability to work effectively at all levels.
- Ability to present adequate working papers to enable the Risk, Compliance & Audit Specialist to assess work done and matters to be reported.
- Always act in a professional and ethical manner including observing the confidential nature of Internal Audit’s work.
- Highly organised with strong organisation and planning skills, ability to prioritise tasks and deliver assigned audits in line with the audit plan.
- Excellent IT skills.
Desirable
- Proven internal audit experience, preferably auditing cooperative societies.
- Proven knowledge of auditing standards and procedures.
- Public sector audit experience and an understanding of the regulatory environment.
- High attention to detail and excellent analytical skills.
- Excellent IT audit skills e.g. use of CAATs.
