Investigative Journalist

The post is tenable at Lilongwe office and the job holder reports to the Bureau Chief.

Job Brief

The Investigative Journalist develops and writes ground breaking investigative stories for publication in NPL brands. He/she also generates long and short-term investigative news projects and content and covers major emerging issues.

Duties and responsibilities

i. Newsgathering

  • Plans investigative stories. This includes identification of newsworthy ideas into clear synopses, well-articulated hypothesis, methodology, risk analysis and budgets.
  • Cultivates and manages a broad source and contacts base with players across sectors and institutions.
  • Conducts interviews with a wide range of relevant sources to establish facts and /or informed opinions for building stories and Interpreting complex issues.
  • Examines documents for additional evidence and contextual background of news stories.
  • Secures and provides evidence for news articles.
  • Participates ir peer mentoring and other internal value adding processes.

ii. News writing and reporting

  • Writes stories that are free of errors in facts, style, spellings, punctuation, and grammar while avoiding consequential omissions.
  • Writes stories and features from a fair, unbiased perspective and sensitive to legal and ethical pitfa Is.
  • Adheres to content submission deadlines.

iii. Digital first

  • Helps to expand NPL’s digital footprint by writing distinctive news articles.
  • Prepares and schedules social media posts for NPL digital channels towards the more digitally mobile and platform- dominated media environment.
  • Takes and posts pictures and provides other info-graphics for news stories.
  • Keeps us with structural shifts towards the digitally mobile and platform dominated media environment.

  • Good knowledge of Microsoft Office and digital first applications.

Qualifications and Work Experience

  • A Bachelor of Arts in Journalism, Media/Communication Studies, Humanities, Social Sciences or related qualifications from NCHE approved higher learning institutions.
  • Those with additional relevant post-graduate qualifications will have an added advantage.
  • At least five years work experience in investigative journalism.
