Job Description

Introduction 

The Malawi-Liverpool-Wellcome Research Programme (MLW) is an internationally recognised centre for research and research training, affiliated to the Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHeS). MLW has 2 aims, to conduct excellent research to benefit health and train the next generation of researchers and leaders. Our Blantyre-based offices located within the vicinity of the largest hospital in Malawi, Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital (QECH) provide for the optimum research environment.

Job Summary.

The job holder is responsible for supporting in organizing and holding trainings in hand hygiene, aseptic techniques and environmental cleaning as strategies to improve infection prevention and control in the respective hospitals. IPC-Implement an NIHR funded project will be conducting an Implementation and quality improvement research in two healthcare facilities namely Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital and Zomba Central Hospital.

The IPC-Implement research assistants will be responsible for supporting the preparation of training, orientation of different strategies, revision and adaptation of guidelines and quality improvement.

Responsibilities

Job Responsibilities.

Technical work

  • Support the revision and adaptation of existing guidelines with the Study Implementation Lead and Principal Investigator.
  • To assist in organizing and hold training programmes in hand hygiene, aseptic techniques and environmental cleaning.
  • To orient the revised IPC guidelines.
  • To assist in conducting quality improvement programmes through capacity building and strengthing under the support and supervision of the SIL and PI.
  • To monitor the quality improvement strategies put in place.
  • To maintain coherent records of daily activity and provide updates as requested by the investigators.
  • To arrange reimbursements for participants.
  • Research assistants may be requested to perform other reasonable tasks at the request of their supervisors consistent with their level of training and responsibility.
  • Disseminate data at local conferences and IPC national steering committee.

Internal and external communication

  • Provide regular written progress reports, feedback, up-to-date documentation of all research activities to the SIL, PI and trial coordinator to provide

Health & Safety Responsibilities.

  • Take full responsibility for ensuring a safe work environment by following health and safety rules at all times for colleagues and study participants.
  • Keep up to date and maintain awareness of all Health and Safety issues by fulfilling the following;
  • Attending the scheduled quarterly Health and Safety sensitization trainings at least once a year.
  • Attend a Health and Safety induction during the first week of employment, signing acknowledgement and keep abreast of the MLW Health and Safety policies and their updates.
  • Attend and be updated in Good Clinical Practice
  • Participate in risk management exercises.
  • Immediately notify the Line Manager of all accidents, and potential hazards.

Requirements

Qualifications 

  • Applicants should hold an undergraduate degree in Nursing, Medicine, or Clinical Medicine
  • proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • strong organizational and communication skills, and fluency in Chichewa and English.
  • Adherence to good clinical practice, the ability to work independently, attention to detail, and maintaining confidentiality

Familiarity with clinical sciences and prior experience in similar roles are advantageous.

Other Required Knowledge, Skills, Attributes and Experience.

  • Excellent knowledge and experience in working with Microsoft Office products.
  • Familiarity with clinical sciences an advantage
  • Good recording keeping, time-management and organizational skills.
  • Good communicator in Chichewa and English.
  • Ability to adhere to good clinical practice.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to develop and maintain good relationships with others.
  • Ability to pay attention to details.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Mature, with good sense of confidentiality.
