Project Brief

The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH is a German federal enterprise. GIZ supports the Federal German Government in achieving its objectives in the field of international cooperation for sustainable development. GIZ operates in more than 130 countries around the globe. In Malawi, GIZ has been working for more than 50 years.

GIZ implements the Energising Development (EnDev) project in Malawi and is looking for skilled and passionate team members to help improve access to energy throughout Malawi. EnDev promotes sustainable access to modern energy services worldwide, with a particular focus on the poor. Through its bottom-up approach, EnDev also contributes to creating positive economic, social and environmental impacts. By December 2023, EnDev has helped 31.6 million people worldwide to gain access to either electricity or improved cooking technologies in households. In addition, 30,900 social institutions and 81,700 small and medium-sized enterprises have benefitted from sustainable access to modern energy services. The Energising Development (EnDev) partnership is a multi-donor energy access programme currently financed currently by four donor countries: the Netherlands, Germany, Norway, and Switzerland. The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH acts as lead agency for the implementation of the programme and cooperates closely with the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) as well as other local implementation partners.

Component: Putting Energy to Work!

The Putting Energy to Work! Component is co-financed by the European Delegation to Malawi and aims at creating an impact in regard to strengthening the market for needs-based, climate-friendly technologies and services for PUE and, thereby, contribute to the socio-economic development of Malawi.

The Outcome of the project component is to improve the access to and uptake of distributed, stand-alone PUE technologies and services, with an increased participation of women, youth and people with disabilities, as well as improving framework conditions for investing in PUE technology and services.
This shall be achieved through a market-based, ecosystem approach with targeted demand and supply side interventions, as well as strategic enabling environment measures.

Supply side interventions will focus on increasing the availability and improving the quality of PUE technologies and services. To that end, the project aims at de-risking the commercialisation of PUE technologies and services, supporting companies to introduce/ expand the offer of PUE solutions and scaling up distribution structures and sales to MSME. A complementary combination of two main instruments will be applied on the supply side: 1) a business development support (BDS) facility and 2) a results-based financing (RBF) approach.

Demand side interventions will focus on supporting relevant MSME along (agricultural) value chains to gain capacities and knowledge to successfully adopt PUE technologies and services. Actions to stimulate demand, accelerate the adoption and optimised use of PUE technologies and services will address two main dimensions: 1) increasing awareness and decision-making capacity about PUE and 2) building the capacities of MSME to maximise the benefits of PUE adoption.

The Enabling environment activities include cooperations with universities on PUE research projects, private sector coordination through REIAMA, access to consumer financing as well as policy advocacy.
