Job Description

Rays of Hope Ministries is a non-profit organization that collaborates with the Malawi government in the achievement of critical development goals present in the Malawi 2063 agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The organization is based out of Blantyre and operates in Zomba, Mchinji, Ntchisi, Thyolo, Neno, Nsanje, Mwanza, Chikwawa and Lilongwe.

In partnership with the Save the Children International (SCI), we are in a consortium of four (4) organizations – Save the Children, Future4All, and Youth for Development and Productivity (YODEP) to implement Abwenzi A Ana project in Ntcheu.

Abwenzi A Ana is a program designed to ensure Children in Ntcheu, particularly girls affected by inequality and discrimination are protected from sexual violence and exploitation by 2032.  Such a goal begs for an integrated implementation approach, and Abwenzi A Ana adopted a socio-ecological model to confront the root causes of abuse. Child, family, community, institutions and policy will be targeted if meaningful transformational change among children is to happen.  To that end, we seek to recruit livelihood field officers with the following specific competencies.

1.    Livelihood Officer – 1 Post

Job Abstract

The Livelihood Officer role ensures that children and the youth in the impact area are not vulnerable to sexual exploitation and abuse because of their economic status. The incumbent shall work with the individual, family, community, and institution actors to reinforce their economic status as a shield against sexual exploitation and abuse. Specifically, the job holder together with the community and particular households, shall explore livelihood options (on-farm/off-farm) to reduce the vulnerability of children and youth in the impact area.

Key Areas of Accountability

I.  Program Implementation Quality

·       Actively participate in exercises that promote food security practices such as disaster risk reduction interventions, access to capital and markets, sustainable agriculture/horticulture

·       Monitor and provide timely, relevant, and accurate feedback on the progress of livelihood activities

·       Assist in leading and overseeing the selection/sampling of the beneficiaries of the livelihood activities

·       Capacitate structures (district/community/school/family) with skills that effectively respond to disasters and emergencies as a cushion to economic vulnerability

·       Prepare quality and timely activity reports to the Programs Manager/Supervisor that are relevant to the provision of livelihood programming and feed into the program’s results framework.

II.   Coordination

·       Organize the impartation of business-related skills such as savings, financial literacy to incubate locally viable economic activities

·       Promote effective collaboration and networking with state and non-state actors on livelihood-related issues.

·       Be actively involved at district level in the implementation of livelihood activities linking the project plans with the district level set goals.

·       Help in creating spaces where individuals, families, communities, and institutions engage in profitable and sustainable economic activities

·       Coordinate all activities related to natural resource conservation that includes climate-smart agriculture

·       Document and report developments in the livelihood activities and create spaces for technical support to ensure the achievement of the set project goals.

III.   Community Mobilization

·       Mobilize relevant structures at individual, family, and community level to participate in disaster risk management activities before, during and post stages

·       Activate organic forums to enhance mapping, preparedness, and mitigation abilities during disaster and emergencies

·       Convene individuals, families, the community and institutional players to sensitize and create awareness on food security and livelihood activities.

·       Ensure active participation at district, and community platforms to sharing livelihood knowledge and practices relevant to cushion food insecurities, and boost economic status

·       Catalyze networking and mobilization works with various stakeholders present in the community  around off-farm/on-farm livelihood to create sustainable markets

·       Induce organic shifts of norms, attitudes, and behaviors to incubate sustainable livelihood practices using relevant social behavior change approaches

IV.  Facilitation

·       Facilitate a process where community and school structures acquire and improve their skills in disaster risk management

·       Collaborate and participate in scenario planning with relevant structures to avail accurate weather forecasts and early warning signs on potential hazards and risks

·       Support in ensuring partnerships and quality networking with state and non-state actors at all levels (district, institutional, community, family, individual) to promote sustainable livelihood proven practices

·       Create opportunities where organic economic-related networking occurs between vulnerable children, their families, and the community at large

Qualifications

  • Degree from an accredited institution of higher learning in either of the following: disaster risk management, social sciences, natural resources management, community development, international development.
  • At least a minimum of two years of work experience in program implementation or other related fields; work experience in the development setting (NGO) is a plus
  • Experience in implementing humanitarian, community based disaster risk management and climate change projects are an advantage.
