Banyan Global is recruiting a local political economy expert for the Learn to Perform (L2P) award on the USAID/Malawi Political Economy Analysis (PEA) task. The local PEA expert will support the team leader in the scoping and implementation of the PEA study for the Mission. The ideal candidate will have previously participated in PEA studies for USAID Missions or other international organizations. The position is open to Malawian candidates only.

Responsibilities

  • Identify key informants as well as secondary sources of information to be used during the data collection phase of the PEA
  • Arrange and organize the fieldwork agenda, including individual meetings and focal groups
  • Work together with the team leader in data collection processes
  • Contribute to the development of the PEA study design
  • Support the documentation of PEA findings in a final report and other agreed-upon communications materials (e.g., PowerPoint presentations, one-pagers, etc.)
  • Support dissemination of PEA findings and critical messages to segmented target audiences
  • With support from L2P staff, organize the logistics of the validation workshop
  • Provide additional contact details for people pertinent to the PEA as may be possible
  • Respond to ad hoc requests related to the assignment from the Team Leader

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in development, Social Science, Political Science, or related field
  • Fluent in English, both oral and written skills
  • At least five years experience in policy, governance, health, education, gender, or related fields
  • Good understanding of the political economy dynamics of Malawi
  • Proven experience conducting PEAs
  • Proven experience working with government authorities, civil society organizations, and academic institutions in Malawi
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrable understanding of the political economy analysis approach, clear methodology, and the outputs expected from the assignment
  • Ability to work autonomously and deliver the PEA in a timely fashion
  • Some experience designing and implementing M&E and learning initiatives on international development initiatives
  • Understanding of USAID’s Program Cycle, including MEL-related requirements and guidance
  • Professional experience in Malawi
