News Analyst – Legal Affairs

The post is tenable at Blantyre Office and the job holder reports to the Managing Editor.

Job Brief

The job holder covers and writes in-depth ana ysis on the justice system across all organs of the Malawi Government the Executive, Legislature and the Judiciary as well as the International legal architecture relevant to Malawi.

Duties and Responsibilities

i. Newsgathering

  • Cultivates and develops contacts at court houses and the criminal justice system in general nationwide and internationally.
  • Develops synopses that should yield investigative, exclusive and analytical stories on crime, the justice system in general and governance issues.
  • Keeps a close watch on major investigative and prosecuting agencies such as the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), the Malawi Police Service (MPS) and the Financial Intelligence Authority (FIA) to get exclusives to report on criminal activities.
  • Covers court cases.
  • Tracks and reports on the works of human rights bodies to report on emerging issues in the humar rights arena.
  • Closely follows the initiation of legal and regulatory frameworks; tracks new laws that are being introduced, amended or repealed and produce explanatory stories to help shape debate.
  • Interviews a range of relevant sources to establish facts and/or informed opinions for building stories and interpreting complex issues.
  • Takes pictures, audios, video clips and develop info-graphics.
  • Participates in peer mentoring.

ii. News writing and reporting

  • Writes clear, coherent and concise stories on crime, courts, human rights and the justice system in general with special focus on police, criminals, victims and those making decisions.
  • Produces news content that is free of errors in facts, style, spelling. punctuation and grammar while avoiding consequential omissions.
  • Writes stories and features from a fair and unbiased perspective that is sensitive to legal and ethical pitfalls.
  • Adheres to story submission deadlines as per daily, weekly and monthly plans.

Qualifications Work Experience

  • A minimum of Diploma in Law or related field, including Police Training. Those with first degrees in other fields such as Journalism, but have proven track record of reporting in the Justice Sector, especially courts, may also apply.
  • At least three years’ work experience.
