Job Description

Malawi Blood Transfusion Service (MBTS) is a Trust that was established to provide a safe and adequate supply of blood and blood products to meet the needs of all patients in authorised hospitals in Malawi.

It is committed to meet its objective of collecting, processing and testing all blood from voluntary non-remunerated blood donors in low-risk populations to international standards, in a cost-efficient manner.

Job Summary

The Nursing Officer is responsible to and receives directions from the Chief Nursing Officer and in her absence, the Head of the Centre.

The Nursing Officer supervises and leads a blood collection team. She or he will carry out all aspects of blood collection activities including the selection and care of blood donors, phlebotomy, providing pre- and post-donation information giving, planning blood donation clinics, organising and managing blood donation clinics, training, strategy development, budgeting and developing the blood donor programme.

Qualifications Experience and Competencies

  • Registered nurse with a degree in nursing from a recognised institution with at least 1 year work experience in a central or equivalent busy hospital or diploma in nursing from a recognised institution with at least 3 years work experience in a central or equivalent busy hospital or in a blood transfusion service
  • Registered with Nurses and Midwives Council of Malawi as a registered nurse midwife
  • Good communication skills
  • Ability to build a successful team
  • Quality awareness and customer care skills
  • Good customer care skills

Responsibilities

  • Assess, plan, Implement and Evaluate client care to contribute to the efficient management of the Organisation.
  • Lead, direct and guide other Nursing staff/ subordinates in delivery of Quality care.
  • Monitor plans of care, documents and maintain well-updated and complete records to ensure smooth running and continuity of activities.
  • Monitor availability of both human and material resources.
  • Participates in Quality audits.
  • Perform delegated assignment by the Chief Nursing Officer.
  • Develop and maintain continuing and professional development initiatives to meet the changing demands in the area of
  • Nursing and blood transfusion/donation. Excellent ability in client care, maintaining Health standards and carrying out clinical and technical skills
  • Ability to adhere to Standard Operating procedures, systems and own progress plans to ensure that the strategic Objectives of the organisation are fulfilled
