Job Description

Likuni Mission Hospital (LMH) established in 1940 owned by Catholic Church, Archdiocese of Lilongwe and is affiliated to the Christian Health Association of Malawi (CHAM). The institution
is looking for the services of Principal Medical Officer.

Job title: Principal Medical Officer

Grade: G (Government Salary Scale Segment)
Reporting to: The Board Chairperson
Location: Lilongwe

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Administration

  • Analysing operations to evaluate performance of the hospital and its staff in meeting objectives, and to determine areas of potential cost reduction, program improvement, or policy change.
  • Directing and coordinating activities of all departments.
  • Directing and coordinating hospital’s financial and budget activities to fund operations, maximize investments, and increase efficiency.
  • Directing human resources activities, including the approval of human resource plans and activities, the selection of heads of sections and other high-level staff.
  • Approving contracts and agreements with suppliers, distributors, state agencies, and other organizational entities.
  • Reviewing reports submitted by departmental heads to recommend approval or to suggest changes.
  • Making periodic health centre doctor’s visits.
  • Chairing the hospital management committee responsible for running the hospital.
  • Attending standing meetings (board meetings, etc.)
  • Acting as official hospital spokesperson.

Medical

  • Monitoring quality and appropriateness of medical care.
  • Providing guidance and leadership for performance guidelines.
  • Developing policies and procedures.
  • Managing strategic development.
  • Overseeing clinical peer review.
  • Overseeing documentation and care planning.
  • Managing physician relations and/or representation.
  • Handling clinical patient complaints.
  • Addressing emergency issues.
  • Supporting physician education.
  • Managing community relations.
  • Handling physician behaviour and impairment issues.

Qualification and Experience

  • A minimum of a Medical Degree with board certification in a field along with several years of experience. Those with MBA will have added advantage.

Essential Skills

  • Ability to interpret human resource policies and financial reports
  • Strong interpersonal, communication and negotiation skills,
  • Those with experience in the health sector will have an added advantage
  • Applicants should be conversant with the Malawi Labor Laws and have up-to-date conflict resolution skills
  • Have strong analytical and time management skills
  • be conscientious and result-oriented
  • Applicants must be mature, responsible committed and practicing Christian

Remuneration

A competitive remuneration package in line with Government of Malawi Health Service Salary Structure including incentives will be offered to a successful candidate.

Contract Period

3 years renewable contract upon assessment of performance.
