Job Description
The National Youth Council of Malawi is a statutory corporation established by an Act of Parliament-The National Youth Council of Malawi Act (Act No 22 of 1996). Its functions include developing, promoting, and controlling youth activities, registering youth organizations, organizing scholarships, establishing cooperation guidelines, and promoting training courses. The Council’s vision is to build a Malawi where young people can develop their full potential and contribute to sustainable development. It is an implementing arm of the Ministry of Youth, comprising the General Assembly, Board of Directors, Secretariat, and affiliates (registered youth organizations). The Council works collaboratively with youth organizations, government agencies, civil society, and other stakeholders to empower young people and advocate for policies that promote their development and participation in national decision-making processes.
Programme Associates (Interns)
Profile of the position
This is an entry-level position aimed at providing young people, particularly fresh graduates, the opportunity to grow their career and gain the necessary experience while contributing to national development and to the Council’s goals and objectives. The Associates will be engaged on short-term basis and will be assigned to specific programmes while accessing opportunities to develop their skills and abilities across all programme areas. The Programme Associates report to Programme Officers.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Support Programme Officers in planning, implementation, monitoring and reporting of programmes activities
- Be responsible for coordination of volunteers engaged by the Programmes Department
- Track actions and issues to ensure that programme-level resolutions are achieved
- Perform the duties of the Programme Assistant upon assignment by the Programme Officers of the Director of Programmes
- Be responsible for any other duties as may be assigned from time to time.
Required qualification and experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences, Humanities, Education, Development Communications, Agriculture, Public Health or other related fields
- Knowledge of participatory approaches
- Knowledge of national development policies related to youth development
- Good interpersonal skills
- High aptitude with an ability to learn and adapt quickly to changing environment
- Highly engaged young person, open minded with good understanding of multiculturalism, diversity, inclusion as well as gender and social issues.
