Program: Building Education Foundations Through Innovation and Technology (BEFIT) Program
Location: Lilongwe/ Ntcheu
Reports To: District Coordinator
Job Overview:
The Project Accountant will be responsible for overseeing the financial management of the BEFIT Programme. This role includes budgeting, financial reporting, ensuring compliance with donor
requirements, managing expenditures, and providing financial insights to support the successful implementation of the programme.
Core responsibilities:
Financial Management and Reporting:
- Prepare and manage the programme’s budget in collaboration with project managers and stakeholders, ensuring alignment with programme goals.
- Monitor expenditures to maintain budgetary compliance and generate periodic financial reports (monthly, quarterly, and annual) for donors and internal stakeholders.
- Ensure accurate recording and documentation of all financial transactions in compliance with organizational and donor requirements.
- Preparation of payments and ensuring that all supporting documentations are attached and follow the stipulated FYF financial procedures.
Budgeting, Forecasting, and Grant Management:
- Assist in the development of annual budgets and financial plans, and conduct regular budget reviews and forecasts to ensure financial sustainability.
- Manage the financial aspects of grants, including budget monitoring, preparation of financial reports, and timely submission to donors.
- Coordinate with programme teams to ensure financial reporting is consistent with project activities and deliverables.
Compliance, Audit, and Financial Analysis:
- Ensure compliance with donor regulations, financial policies, and legal requirements, and prepare for and coordinate external audits for the BEFIT Programme.
- Implement and monitor internal controls to safeguard project assets and maintain the integrity of financial records.
- Provide financial analysis to support decision-making, including costbenefit analysis and financial risk assessments, and advise on the financial implications of project activities.
- Ensure all MRA taxes are paid on time and conforms to the tax regulations.
- In liaison with the HR ensure that all staff are appraised, go on holidays.
Training, Capacity Building, and Liaison:
- Provide training and support to project staff on financial policies, procedures, and best practices to develop financial literacy and management capacity within the programme team.
- Act as a liaison between the finance department and programme teams, facilitating smooth communication and coordination.
- Collaborate with external partners, including donors and contractors, on financial matters related to the BEFIT Programme.
Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- Experience: Minimum of 5 years of experience in project accounting, preferably in the NGO or development sector.
- Experience working with international donors and understanding of donor compliance requirements.
- Knowledge of the education sector or similar programmes.
Preferred Skills:
- Strong knowledge of financial management and accounting principles.
- Proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Excel.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Working Conditions:
- The role may require occasional travel to project sites.
- Ability to work in a multicultural environment.
