Job Description

John of God Hospitaller Services Malawi is a non-profit faith-based healthcare organization established in 1994 to contribute to the development of health for all Malawians including the vulnerable, marginalized, and excluded groups. With its operations in both Lilongwe and Mzuzu, St John of God Malawi is a key provider of tertiary and community-based mental health promotion and care; early intervention services, special needs and Inclusive education for children with both intellectual and physical disability, vocational training for orphans & vulnerable youth including those with a disability, health care and ancillary services for older persons; psychosocial counselling, stress, and addiction management services; rehabilitation of street children; self-help group approach for women empowerment and tertiary level training in Psychiatric Nursing, Clinical Medicine- Psychiatry & Mental Health, Psychosocial Counselling and General Nursing.

Saint John of God (SJOG) Malawi would like to fill the following position at its centre in Lilongwe:

Job Title: Psychiatrist

Job Summary

This is a senior managerial position. Under the general supervision of the Chief Executive Officer, the Psychiatrist will be responsible for diagnosing and managing psychiatric disorders, supervising and appraising mental health clinicians, overseeing research activities and general leadership of the Clinical Department.

Responsibilities (which include, but are not limited to):

Practice:

  • Assessing and evaluating patients’ emotional, behavioural, and mental state through discussion, observation and analysis of various sources including patients, family and other informants.
  • Developing and instituting comprehensive treatment plans including psychological and pharmacological methods, according to patients’ needs and the extent of their emotional, social, cognitive, developmental or behavioural problems.
  • Monitoring and regular follow-up with patients to check progress and effects of any medication and adjusting accordingly where necessary.
  • Thoroughly documenting and maintaining patient and clinical records including each patient’s diagnosis, symptoms, medication, treatment effectiveness, etc.
  • Providing patients as well as families with emotional support, informing them about the patient’s condition and strategies to help manage their problems.

Education:

  • Conducting theoretical and clinical teaching and assessment for students and staff.
  • Organising on-the-job training of staff and others on placement

Policy and Leadership:

  • Providing leadership to the clinical team and consulting with other multidimensions team members.
  • Providing periodic reports, updates, and advice to management on clinical and pharmacy-related issues.
  • Follow and promote ethical and legal policies, procedures, and standards across the service.

Research:

  • Conduct and lead staff in research activities in contemporary new medical treatments and practices including continuing professional development.
  • Keep up-to-date with professional job knowledge by reading publications, attending educational conferences, and maintaining professional networks.

Requirements

  • Must have an MBBS and specialist qualification in Psychiatry e.g. MMed in Psychiatry In-depth knowledge of various psychotherapeutic methods
  • At least 2 years of experience (minimum) in a related position
  • Registered with the Medical Council of Malawi
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain medical terms and conditions to a non-medical audience
  • Superior listening ability and emotional intelligence.
  • Willingness to work with mentally sick individuals with their families.
  • Strict adherence to Saint John of God Child and Vulnerable Adult Protection Policy
