The Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR) is inviting applications from suitably qualified, highly motivated, and experienced individuals to join LUANAR Radio based at LUANAR’s central offices at the Bunda College of Agriculture
campus.
ABOUT LUANAR RADIO:
LUANAR Radio is a radio network intended to reach Malawi’s farming communities through LUANAR FM and online platforms. Broadcasting in both local languages and English, our goal is to deliver informative and engaging content that addresses key issues impacting agriculture, the environment, health and nutrition, and gender and youth. We are seeking passionate and creative individuals to join our broadcast team to help develop impactful audio content for our audiences. 1. RADIO PRODUCER/PRESENTER:
Role Summary:
Receive and manage correspondences and calls on behalf of the Head of As a Radio Producer and/or Presenter, you will play a key role in planning, creating, and delivering radio content that resonates with listeners across Malawi.
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Develop relevant radio program content focused on developmental areas primarily agriculture.
• Write scripts for radio programs and coordinate with other members of the production team to ensure high-quality content delivery.
• Oversee or participate in the production and editing of audio content, including sound bites, pre-recorded segments, and live broadcasts.
• Present programs in an engaging, clear, and personable manner.
• Operate as the ‘voice’ of programs, managing live broadcasts, introducing music or segments, and interacting with listeners through calls, messages, and social media.
• Manning continuity shifts, presenting radio programs, and promoting audience connection through engaging agricultural-based content.
• Identify and invite guests, including farmers, service providers, duty bearers and influencers, to contribute to the development of relevant programs.
• Engage with the audience through various channels, such as phone-ins, social media, and email.
• Encourage listener participation by responding to questions, comments, and feedback to build an active community
• Coordinate with the Marketing and Communications teams for audience engagement campaigns and station events.
• Manage the program’s online presence by posting show updates, clips, and engaging content on social media platforms.
• Foster an online community by responding to comments, creating polls, and sharing program-related content.
• Assist in training interns or student broadcasters on broadcast techniques, presentation skills, and production processes.
• Ensure all content complies with broadcasting laws, station policies, and industry standards.
• Perform any other duties as assigned from time to time
QUALIFICATIONS AND DESIRED QUALITIES:
• At least a diploma in any of the following fields: Agriculture Education and Development Communication, Journalism, Mass Communication or a related field from a recognized institution of higher learning.
• Experience in radio production and presentation.
• A pleasant and engaging personality, suited for on-air presentations.
• Strong writing and communication skills.
• Ability to connect with and engage the farming communities in the country.
• Ability to engage audiences on social media platforms.
• Fluency in English and at least one local language (Chichewa, Chitumbuka, or Chiyao).
• Strong knowledge of development topics, including agriculture, environmental sustainability, health, nutrition, and social issues affecting gender and youth.
• Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.

2. BROADCASTING ENGINEER:
Role Summary:
As a Radio Production Engineer, you will be responsible for ensuring the seamless technical operation of LUANAR Radio broadcasts, maintaining studio equipment, and providing production support for live and recorded shows.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Ensure all broadcast and studio equipment, including transmission systems and audio routers, are in optimal working condition.
• Diagnose and resolve technical problems that arise during live and recorded broadcasts.
• Set up and integrate new hardware and software, including microphones, mixers, playout systems, and automation tools.
• Stay updated on the latest industry technologies and recommend improvements or upgrades for more efficient operations.
• Plan and execute outside broadcasts, special events, and technical setups for seamless delivery.
• Adhere to industry standards and regulatory requirements for all equipment and transmission systems.
• Provide training and technical support to junior engineers and production teams.
• Oversee audio and video signals to ensure high-quality broadcast output.
• Keep records of equipment maintenance, system configurations, and technical issues.
• Work closely with other departments to ensure smooth technical operations.
QUALIFICATIONS AND DESIRED QUALITIES
• At least a Diploma in Telecommunications, Broadcast Engineering, Audi Production, Electronic Engineering, or a related field.
• At least 3 years of experience in radio production or broadcasting engineering.
• Strong knowledge of audio, video, and transmission technologies.
• Familiarity with industry standards, compliance regulations, and IT-based broadcast systems.
• Excellent troubleshooting, problem-solving, and communication skills.
• Ability to work under pressure and respond quickly to technical issues.
TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF ENGAGEMENT
All the successful candidates will be engaged on an initial 2-year contract before they can be considered for permanent appointment based on satisfactory performance. Remuneration will be in line with LUANAR Staff Regulations and Conditions of Service (2023) applicable to staff on fixed-term contract.
