Overview

VACANCY: REHABILITATION TECHNICIANS (2)

Background

Malawi Against Physical Disabilities (MAP) is a Trustee Organization whose mandate is to provide free medical rehabilitation services to Malawians. This is done through provision of physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy and nursing services. These services are supplemented by provision of assistive devices which are given to the clients.

MAP services are offered through settings in outreach services offered through four regional offices in Blantyre, Zomba, Lilongwe and Rumphi. These regional offices have a workshop each which fabricate and supply different types of assistive devices as required by the clients. MAP also runs the institutional rehabilitation setting at the Kachere rehabilitation Centre which is in Blantyre. This is a 60-bed facility which admits clients from all over the country with various types of disabilities. MAP also trains Rehabilitation Technicians for its own human resource sustainability as well as for the sector.

Malawi Against Physical Disabilities gets its staff salaries from government which also provides subvention for the operations of Kachere Rehabilitation Centre.

With funding from the Treasury, MAP seeks the services of a suitably qualified and experienced person to serve as the Rehabilitation Technician tenable at its Head Office in Blantyre.

The job.

The job involves day to day provision of rehabilitation services to clients with various types of disabilities admitted at Kachere and in outreach setting. The person will at times work under the supervision of either a physiotherapist or occupational therapist.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

The applicants should have a diploma in medical rehabilitation from a recognized institution. Those with experience with management of neurological patients have an added advantage.

JOB DECRIPTION FOR REHABILITATION TECHNICIANS

You will be expected to perform the following duties under the supervision of either a physiotherapist or an occupational therapist:

  • Assess clients with various forms of disabilities (orthopedic, neurological and pediatric), plan their rehabilitation process, implement it and plan subsequent follow-ups.
  • Take measurements of various types of appliances and link them with workshop staff for timely production followed by fitting and monitoring of function of the appliance.
  • Arrange for repairs or replacements of the appliance when required.
  • Educate patients and guardians about their condition or through health education sessions in the community on how they would take responsibilities in managing themselves to maintain levels of function.
  • Sep up a rehabilitation department if required with support and in collaboration with the district management team.
  • Train any support staff e.g., nurses in the area of rehabilitation supervise their performances if appropriate.
  • Keep records (confidentially) of all activities and clients seen.
  • Produce reports as required by your supervisor or head office on monthly, quarterly or annual basis.
  • Set up some professional network with stakeholders working in your catchment area for sharing of resources and responsibilities and for support of your services.
  • Make referrals of clients to other professionals and institutions, follow them up and get feedback for further management.
  • Take responsible care of all MAP resources e.g. motorbikes, finances and report any defects for repairs or replacement and facilitate any renewal of expired documents for any machinery.
  • Plan your monthly schedules (including inpatient) and be able to fulfill it effectively
  • Initiate and set up disability groups in your catchment area e.g., mother-child support groups, stroke clents group and many others for easy group therapies.
  • Link those clients with capacity to any socio-economic services groups for any soft loan assistance in the community.
  • Perform any other duties in line with your designation as instructed by your supervisor.
