Job Description

INTRODUCTION

The Malawi-Liverpool-Wellcome Research Programme (MLW) is an internationally recognised centre for research and research training, affiliated to the Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHeS). MLW has 2 aims, to conduct excellent research that benefits health and train the next generation of researchers and leaders. The Malawi Accelerated Research in Vaccines by Experimental and Laboratory Systems (MARVELS) Project conducts research using Controlled Human Infection Models (CHIM) to accelerate vaccine development. To support its functions, MARVELS Project requires the service of a knowledgeable and hands-on person to take up the position of Research Assistant, to be based at the MLW offices in Blantyre. The successful candidate will work in our immunology laboratory as part of a team investigating carriage and immunological responses of study participants to experimental challenge.

POSITION FUNCTION (PURPOSE)

The postholder will work was a part of a team investigating microbiological and immunological responses of study participants in Controlled Human Infection Models (CHIM). The post holder will be in immunology laboratory and will be required to work some unusual hours which will be repaid by time off in lieu than paid overtime.

Responsibilities

Technical

  • Responsible for the processing, testing and storage of samples in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures (SoPs), following Good Clinical Laboratory Practices (GCLP).
  • Performing immunology assays including but not limited to:
  • Immunophenotyping on samples following standardized protocols (Cell staining, acquisition using flow cytometry, data analysis in FlowJo).
  • Polysaccharide-specific B cell assay
  • Streptococcus pneumoniae (SPN) saliva IgA, serum IgG ELISA
  • Isolation of PBMCs.

Collaborations

  • Work in collaboration with the Immunology Lead, Laboratory Lead Scientist and other laboratory staff to ensure smooth implementation of research studies.
  • Work with collaborators to develop manuscripts focused on cellular immune responses and the association with experimental pneumococcal challenge.
  • Assist Immunology Lead in collection and presentation of research data which includes conducting experiments in the laboratory and maintaining an updated record of research findings

  General Administration

  • Prepare clear, periodic data updates for team reviews.
  • Maintain and update Sops, and staff training files
  • Support preparation for study monitoring visits
  • Provide assistance to Intern Research Assistants working on the project
  • Safe keeping of paper and electronic records
  • Monitor and maintain laboratory equipment at regular intervals according to set SoPs as appropriate
  • Maintain high standards of professional behavior at all times, in accordance with the MLW Code of Professional conduct.
  • Report to the Principal Investigator in a timely manner any expected and unexpected problems that may arise during study implementation and collection of research data.
  • Attend scientific meetings and seminars both internal and external as available and as requested by the Chief Investigator or Immunology lead
  • Keep all bench surfaces and equipment clean in all areas (save areas cleaned by housekeeping).
  • Perform other relevant assigned duties as requested by the Laboratory Lead Scientist and/or the Immunology Lead.

Training

  • To assist in the training of new staff as appropriate.

  • Ensuring that one is kept up to date on developing trends in areas which may have an impact on your work activities.
  • Ensuring that one is kept abreast of the wider project activities and other parts of the institution.
  • Ensuring that one’s personal development needs are well thought out to help in acquiring new skills, competencies, and knowledge.

Health and Safety.

    • Ensuring the attendance of all scheduled and mandatory Health and Safety programs for section team members.
    • Ensuring that Health and Safety rules are always followed within the section.
    • Participate in health risk management exercises.
    • Notify the line manager on all accidents and potential hazards.

Failure to abide by the Health and Safety protocols and putting oneself, colleagues and study participants at risk and failure to attend 1 Health and Safety session in a year will lead to disciplinary action. All staff are employed under the MLW Programme and are ultimately responsible to the Programme whether directly employed under the Core Grant, a Research Fellowship or project grant.

Safeguarding

  • To be well knowledgeable of the MLW safeguarding policy/provisions and act in accordance with these at all times.

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS: (i.e., Education, Training, and Experience Requirements).

(a)      Education:

MSc in Biomedical Sciences or its equivalent degree which is recognized by the      Medical Council of Malawi.

(b)      Experience:

  • Minimum of at least three years’ experience in immunology is desirable
  • Experience in Immunological principles, flow cytometry and tissue culture
