Research Associate – Scaling up
Overview
The job is primarily to conduct scaling up activities on agroforestry and other ecosystem-based adaptation and natural resources management (NRM) practices in Malawi to accelerate the adoption of appropriate agroforestry technologies and practices to enhance farm productivity, adaptation and mitigation to climate change and biodiversity conservation. The position aims to enable effective design, implementation, and management of integrated restoration livelihood and carbon activities in Malawi. The job holder assists in the implementation, capacity development of partners and support extension staff in farmer training on agroforestry related topics; research, analyses and development of technical information material.
Duties and responsibilities
- Contributing to the development of data collection tools, lead field surveys teams on data collection on tree growing activities of agroforestry, forestry and natural resources management (NRM) as guided by PI.
- Building/strengthening capacity of Government extension officers, NGO implementing Partner technical staff and Lead Farmers in various agroforestry, forestry and agroecology-based practices.
- Developing protocols, manuals and providing technical training and support to consortium partners and other stakeholders on agroforestry practices including FMNR, ANR, tree nurseries, soil water conservation, bioenergy, tree planting, and management
- Supporting implementation of impact assessment strategy including supporting and coordinating quality control in biophysical/biomass baseline,
- Support the design, establishment and management of research/demonstration plots in agroforestry, land restoration and tree-crop management
- Collect data, analyze data and summarise results as guided by principal investigators.
- Supporting the co-designing of project strategies with national lead organization and partners
- Contributing to the production of quarterly and annual technical progress reports.
- Carry out any other relevant tasks as assigned by CIFOR-ICRAF Malawi Country Representative and Principal Investigator.
Requirements
- BSc in Agroforestry, NRM, Forestry, Agriculture and 5 years post qualification experience, or
- MSc in Agroforestry, NRM, Forestry, Agriculture and 2 years post qualification experience
- Knowledge of agroforestry and farming systems in Malawi,
- Excellent writing and communication skills.
Education, knowledge and experience

Terms and conditions
•This is a Locally Recruited position. CIFOR-ICRAF offers competitive remuneration in local currency commensurate with skills and experience.
•The duty station will be in Lilongwe, Malawi CIFOR-ICRAF Offices.
