Job brief
The Solutions Journalist (SOJO) is a rigorous reporting position that spotlights in detail problems in society with evidence-based presentation of existing solutions to enhance knowledge and accountability through constructive content.
i. News gathering
- Cultivates and manages a broad source and contacts base, especially with stakeholders across business sectors, NGOs and the international development community, including aid agencies.
- Identifies and develops newsworthy ideas into synopses that should yield investigative, exclusive and business stories.
- Locates and verifies information for news and feature stories.
- Interviews a range of relevant sources to establish facts and/or informed opinions for building stories and interpreting/explaining complex issues.
- Examines documents for additional evidence and contextual background.
- Takes pictures, audios, video clips and develop sinfo-graphics.
ii. News writing and reporting
- Writes stories from a fair and unbiasec perspective and sensitive to legal and ethical pitfalls.
- Produces feature content that is free of errors in facts, style, spelling, punctuation and grammar while avoiding consequential omissions.
- Writes well-researched, accurate and objective stories with well package and helpful informatior that people can use.
- Contributes to NPL’s social enterprise journalism projects.

Qualifications and Work Experience
i. A minimum of Bachelor of Arts in Journalism, Media Studies, Development Studies and Social Sciences from a recognised institution.
ii. At least three years’ of features writing experience. Those with experience in social work, community mobilisation or the development and/or NGO sector in general may also be considered.
iii. Good knowledge of Microsoft Office and Digital First applications.
