Job Description

The Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR) invites applications
from suitably qualified candidates to be considered for the following vacant posts in various
establishments of the University.

SYSTEMS ENGINEER

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

1. Systems Design and Implementation

  • Work with stakeholders to understand and document system requirements.
  • Design, Develop, Install, configure, and maintain LUANAR systems, including email servers, web servers, and database systems.
  • Ensure that direct subsystems and components work together as a cohesive system.
  • Address compatibility, interoperability, and integration challenges.
  • Design and implement server architectures, including virtualization, storage solutions, and network services.
  • Set up and manage cloud-based infrastructure when necessary to support university applications and services.
  • Develop and implement disaster recovery plans and backup strategies to ensure system integrity and data protection.

2. Systems Maintenance and Optimization

  • Identify potential risks in the design or implementation of the system.
  • Perform routine system upgrades, including patch management, sofware updates, and
    hardware maintenance.
  • Monitor system performance using system monitoring tools to ensure optimal functioning of all ICT systems.
  • Optimize server performance by analyzing system resource usage and adjusting configurations as necessary to meet operational demands.

3. Security Management

  • Implement and maintain system security protocols to protect LUANAR’s ICT infrastructure
    from cyber threats, including data breaches and malware attacks.
  • Configure and maintain user authentication mechanisms, including active directory
    and role-based access controls.
  • Perform security audits, monitor system logs for suspicious activity, and take action to
    mitigate identified risks.

4. Data Management and Storage

  • Oversee the design, implementation, and management of the university’s data storage
    solutions to ensure data availability, integrity, and confidentiality.
  • Implement and manage backup systems, ensuring that critical data is regularly backed
    up and stored securely.
  • Perform data recovery in the event of system failure or data corruption.

5. Application and Database Management

  • Support the deployment and administration of enterprise applications and database systems, ensuring they are configured for performance, security, and availability.
  • Collaborate with application developers and database administrators to integrate systems and optimize their performance.

6. User Support and Documentation

  • Provide technical support and guidance to end-users and ICT staff on system-related issues.
  • Create and maintain technical documentation, including system configurations, processes, and procedures.
  • Train ICT staff on system maintenance and troubleshooting procedures.

7. Project Management

  • Lead and participate in ICT infrastructure projects, ensuring they are delivered on time and within scope.
  • Work with cross-functional teams to plan and implement system upgrades and new technology deployments.
  • Provide regular project updates to the ICT Manager and relevant stakeholders.

Qualifications, Experience, Skills, and Abilities

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Systems Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
  • Proficiency in programming languages including PHP, Python, C++, Java, or C# for system development and automation
  • Proficiency in creating system models using tools like UML, SysML, or other modeling languages.
  • Familiarity with scripting languages like Bash, PowerShell, or Perl for automating system
    tasks.
  • Familiarity with database management systems (SQL, NoSQL, Oracle, MySQL, MongoDB).
  • Experience in designing, querying, and optimizing databases to support system functions.
  • Proficiency with project management software (JIRA, Microsost Project, Confluence).
  • Familiarity with Agile, Scrum, or Waterfall methodologies for managing system engineering projects.

Terms and Conditions of Engagement

All the successful candidates will be engaged on an initial 2-year contract before they can be considered for permanent appointment based on satisfactory performance. Remuneration will be in line with LUANAR Staff Regulations and Conditions of Service applicable to staff on fixed-term contract
