Job Description

The University of Malawi Research Ethics Committee (UNIMAREC) seeks a Compliance Officer Intern. The intern will play a critical role in assessing whether research approved by UNIMAREC is conducted following UNIMAREC guidelines and relevant national and international standards.

Main Duties:

  1. Ensure investigators conduct research following the protocol approved by UNIMAREC and following national regulatory requirements and policies.
  2. Inspect ongoing studies by conducting inspection visits with at least one member of UNIMAREC.
  3. Prepare reports of site inspection visits for UNIMAREC.
  4. Participate in training UNIMAREC members and investigators in research ethics and standards.
  5. Provide advisory services to UNIMAREC members and investigators on good research practices.
  6. Ensure the protection of research participants’ rights, safety, and well-being.
  7. Assist the UNIMAREC Administrator in duties, including screening application packages (protocols) in line with UNIMAREC Guidelines, SOPs, and national regulatory requirements.
  8. Assist the UNIMAREC Administrator in taking minutes at UNIMAREC review meetings.
  9. Ensure that serious adverse events are properly documented and reported to UNIMAREC and relevant national regulatory bodies.
  10. Ensure that all Material Transfer Agreement forms are completed appropriately.
  11. Ensure that all annual progress reports and continuing review applications are completed.
  12. Ensure the filing and maintenance of study files.
  13. Update and manage the UNIMAREC website and Internet client interface module.
  14. Perform any other related duties as assigned by the UNIMAREC Administrator.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:

  1. A minimum of a master’s degree from a recognised university. A Doctoral degree will be an added advantage
  2. At least two years of experience in a research-related field.
  3. Practical knowledge and experience in research proposal development.
  4. Practical skills in project monitoring and evaluation
  5. Knowledge of research ethics and skills in the research process will be an added advantage.

Employment Conditions:

The intern will be employed on a 12-month contract, with the possibility of renewal based on satisfactory performance.
