WaterAid is an international development organization that is working to transform the lives of vulnerable communities with safe water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH).

WaterAid is a member of a Consortium implementing a USAID funded multi-year health systems strengthening and service delivery project in Chitipa, Karonga, Kasungu, Salima and Nkhotakota. The project goal is reducing maternal, new-born, and child mortality through improved access and quality of health service delivery. In collaboration with the Ministry of Health, the Consortium will work to provide quality primary care for essential and integrated Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, Child and Adolescent Health (RMNCH) FP/RH, nutrition, WASH and malaria; Empower Individuals, communities and local organizations to demand higher quality and more available health services, and improve their health seeking behaviour, and engaging multiple sectors to address the social determinants of health.

Under the Momentum Project, WaterAid is looking for an experienced individual to play a vital role in contributing towards Momentum project objectives and WaterAid’s overall mission in Malawi. This a 4-year tenure role.

WASH Advisor

Reporting to the Programme Manager for Health, the position is responsible for overall refinement, coordination, management, compliance and reporting of the MOMENTUM COMPONENT 2 Activity. This position is responsible for setting, achieving and maintaining quality standards in the delivery of the programme in collaboration with WaterAid’s SBCC, M&E and WASH Governance & Technical Specialists. This role will ensure that the MOMENTUM COMPONENT 2 Activity remains coherent, integrates policy and practice and maintains functional working relationships with all consortium partners for the successful implementation of the MOMENTUM COMPONENT 2 Activity at national and district levels. This position will also ensure that MOMENTUM COMPONENT 2 Activity interventions and partnerships remain relevant and influence policy, practice and systems across sectors at district and town levels and also significantly contribute to national level influencing.

Specifically, the WASH Advisor, will be responsible for the following:

To be successful, you’ll need:

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Development Planning, Development Studies from a recognized University, or professional qualifications in civil engineering, water and sanitation, environmental or public health. A Master’s degree will have an added advantage.
  • At least a minimum of five years’ experience in programme planning, development and management at managerial level.
  • At least 5 years’ experience implementing USAID or Donor projects in similar roles
  • Proven experience in water and sanitation work in Malawian context.
  • Developing and managing projects including staff, budgeting and budget management.
  • Experience in implementation of integrated programmes
  • Experience in leading development of models and approaches and packaging learning
  • Understanding of rural and urban WASH programme and policy contexts
  • Experience of development and management of teams and partner organisations
  • Experience of working in matrix relationships will be an added advantage
